BANGOR, Maine — A Hermon couple was arrested and charged with Class A robbery after police responded to reports of a man being dragged behind a car near the intersection of Court and Ohio streets Thursday afternoon.
According to a statement released by the Bangor Police Department Thursday night, Maxwell Stein, 21, and wife Brianna Stein, 21 — both of Hermon — were taken into custody, interviewed, arrested and transported to Penobscot County Jail.
Brianna Stein was charged with robbery, a Class A felony; reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon; driving to endanger; and violation of conditions of release. Maxwell Stein was charged with robbery (Class A felony) and violation of conditions of release.
The Steins were both in custody at Penobscot County Jail Thursday night. Maxwell Stein was being held without bail and Brianna was being held with a $10,000 cash bail, which had not been posted as of 9 p.m.
Their arrests resulted from 911 calls at 12:35 p.m. about a possible robbery. It was reported that two suspects got into a white Subaru and the victim jumped on top of the car to stop them from leaving a residence at the corner of Court and Ohio.
The vehicle accelerated and then slammed on the brakes, throwing the victim to the ground. The vehicle then drove away and was last seen heading out Ohio Street. The victim was injured and taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center.
“There is no immediate threat to the public at this time, and the victim reportedly dragged by the car is at a local emergency room,” Edwards said in a statement released Thursday afternoon. He said the victim’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Bangor police Sgt. Jim Buckley said the Steins and the victim were acquainted, and the incident was apparently not a case of a random robbery.
Shortly after 1:30 p.m., a white Subaru Legacy was found by police on New Boston Road in Hermon, according to a dispatcher at the Penobscot Regional Communications Center. Both suspects were located inside the residence where the vehicle was parked.
According to state Bureau of Motor Vehicles registration records, Brianna Stein owns a white 2000 Subaru Legacy and lives with her mother at 69 New Boston Road in Hermon.
Maine State Police officials were in Hermon interviewing potential witnesses to the incident, according to Edwards. Two Bangor police detectives joined state police shortly before 3 p.m.
Just after 4 p.m., Maxwell Stein was taken into custody and transported from the New Boston Road residence in a state police vehicle.
Both Steins are expected to appear before a judge at Penobscot Judicial Center Friday morning or afternoon.
Stein is no stranger to local police, as he was arrested in September for stealing more than $50,000 in merchandise from his landlord in Holden to fuel a drug habit, according to Bangor Daily News archives.
Brianna Stein also was arrested in the September incident, according to the archives. Maxwell Stein was charged with four counts of felony burglary and four additional counts of felony theft in that incident.
On his Facebook profile page, Maxwell Stein is listed as a 2009 Bangor High School and 2011 Eastern Maine Community College graduate. Brianna is listed as a 2009 Hermon High and 2011 EMCC graduate in the EMS-paramedic program who is now studying mental health counseling at the University of Maine-Augusta.

I am a professional copy editor, and there is nothing at all wrong with the sentence. “As” is a recognized synonym for “since” and “because,” as noted in definition 7 in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th ed.: “for the reason that: BECAUSE, SINCE [stayed home as she had no car].”
Your post, on the other hand, cannot be easily understood and I had to read it two or three times to figure out what you were saying. Quotation marks are needed around “since” and “because” as the words themselves are being discussed.

Gotta love the fact that they were both charged with “violation of conditions of release”… once again showing that Maine’s “catch and release” program is NOT working! When are the courts going to wake up and realize more has to be done? As my (almost) 7 year old would say, “Seriously, people…. Are you kidding me?”
They were, in all likelyhood, out on bail. When you are arrested you are, by law, bail must be set. If you come up with the bail money and the Bail Commisioners fee ($60), plus sign a document listing your bail conditions, you can be released or on bail until your date to be adjuticated in Court.
If you commit another crime while out on bail, you will be charged with that crime plus being charged with conditions of release and your bail money can be confiscated. These two have now demonstrated that they are not capable of abiding by their bail conditions, therefore the higher bail set on the woman and the husband. This can be changed by a Judge.
I know that is how the current system works – but obviously that system is not a deterrent for these people to keep their “nose clean” per se. I am glad that a new, higher bail has been set for the woman and bail was denied for the man; but if they had been in jail serving a sentence for the theft of $50,000 in merchandise to fuel his drug habit then it stands to assume this would be a non-story.
Apparently their court date has not come yet for the previous crime. $50,000.00 crime would make it a felony and would be scheduled for Superior Court. The last time I knew the Court system in Maine is back logged due to a lack of Judges etc. You may be angry with the system but it is in place to protect everyones rights. If by some unfortuate circumstance you were falsely arrested and charged with a crime, you would want every opportunity to prove your innocence.
I suggest that we modify the bail code, so that when it can be shown through incontrovertible evidence (CCTV, cellphone video recordings, surveillance videos, motion detector cameras) that you are the person who did the crime, then NO BAIL.
If we did what you suggest then we would have to more than double the size of our county jails. Plus change the whole judicial system of the US. I don’t think this is going to happen.
You may be right, but if we could see the actual statistics for how many serious crimes are committed by persons on bail, maybe in the end a modification to our system would be justified and financially responsible.

Charged with “four counts of felony burglary and four additional counts of felony theft” in September (Sept. 18th to be exact — one month ago) — and she was charged as well — what is wrong with this picture? Why did these people apparently never face a judge over these charges? (that I can determine)– are the courts that backed up? Why are they free to rob with no consequences?
I’m glad to hear that the victim is going to be okay. Drug-related crimes sure appear to be on the rise. What would we expect when we live in a society of entitlement? Rather ironic that she is studying mental health. Perhaps she should start with herself and those closest to her :)
Given the story says the victim and the Steins are acquainted, the victim may be just as much of a low-life as the Steins. Birds of a feather flock together! And no, I am not blaming the victim, just mentioning a possibility based on facts in evidence.
My heart goes out to Brianna’s Mom. This is every parent’s worse nightmare.
I feel sorry for the people who live on or around Court Street who have to put up with this kind of activity day or night.

Hmm, not sure quite what you mean, maybe I can explain myself better though. I think journalism has a great value to society if done correctly. It allows people to be more aware of their surroundings, and therefore, have a better grasp of reality. When the journalism contains errors, it skews a society’s perception of reality. I believe a society that lacks a good grasp of reality could be in for some potential dangers. The way the headline and caption are written, one would assume that someone actually was dragged by a car. The only reason I’m confused is because there is no mention of the dragging later on in the article, except that whoever called the police mentioned something about a dragging. In fact if you read the article, it sounds more like he fell off the car, and no dragging ever happened. So I guess I’m just looking for some clarification on the truthfulness of the headline. Why not change the headline if it contains an inaccuracy?
I might also mention, I have a degree in media studies, I work in media, and I’ve fallen off a car in very similar fashion when a person drove off with a large sum of money in a parking garage in Las Vegas. I jumped on the car, fell off the car, but was never dragged.

That “some” was a typo. I also typed “societies” instead of “society’s.” Then when I realized my mistake, I just edited to make it right. It’s something very easy to do, and I wonder why 24 hours after the accident, and several edits later, the headline remains unedited? I think because the phrase “dragged behind a car” is more graphically violent then saying someone fell off a car. Illustrating a graphic picture in a headline is a great way to get people to read a story, but not necessarily great for the image of a city that I personally, kind of like.

Tattoo’s are art you choose to put it on your walls i choose to display it on my body. hat would be like me saying oh another David being busted for burgulary! The issue many of us have who work with people with “disabilities” is that they DON’T work, claim they CAN’T work, they receive lots of financial benefits from the state (you and me, the working stiffs, who pay our taxes and work jobs and have actual budgetary constraints) and yet these people on disabilities show up at meeting after meeting after meeting with yet another tattoos. If you have them, you know how much they cost. If people on disabilities have enough free cash to get tattoos, they don’t need my taxpayer dollars!!!

I agree with Sara04605. Brianna was busted for selling drugs while she was a student at Hermon High school. She was kicked out of school and finished up at Bangor Baptist. She was an EMT trainee for awhile and after that she worked for Acadia Mental Health as a mental health tech working with kids. Figure that one out.. She probably is no longer working there but I wonder how much checking Acadia did on her background before they hired her. I realize she was a juvenile while at Hermon but when a mental health hospital hires someone to who is going to work with children and other at risk patients, one would think that a deeper background check might be in order. I will go out on a limb and say she was using drugs while employed as an EMT trainee and also for Acadia. Guess neither employer does drug testing… mmmmmmmmmmmm.. I know nothing of her husband but apparently birds of a feather do flock together. Mom needs to step aside this time and say to her “I’ve tried to help you for years and you have not learned. You are on your own. I love you!” Otherwise she could end up like Nichole L. one of the triple homicide victims.
