BANGOR, Maine — A 34-year-old man purporting to be a transient from Massachusetts was arrested Thursday after refusing to provide his real name to Bangor police officers attempting to investigate an assault complaint lodged against him, Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.

Jeffrey Leblanc had been watching television with a group of people in an apartment at 245 Essex St. when he allegedly — for a reason that remains unknown to police — smacked one of his fellow viewers “upside the head,” Edwards said, citing an arrest report.

The person who was struck reportedly told police officers that he and Leblanc did not know each other and that he did not know why the transient hit him, Edwards said. Edwards said the victim was not badly injured and did not require medical attention.

Police officers charged Leblanc with refusing to provide his name after he gave them several versions of a phony name, Edwards said. Edwards said this sometimes happens when a person being questioned by police officers is wanted on a warrant, which he said was not the case with Leblanc.

  1. A smack upside the head ??
I think most of these jokers on the police page
could use a smack upside the head.
And then put them on the bus with a ticket to Arizona
and a handful of Burger King coupons.
       Good riddance.

  2. “Transient”. We seem to be reading about “transients” a lot lately. The definition of “transient” will include “a temporary condition”. So can I assume that the “transients” we read about are temporary in nature? I bet not! Let’s call a spade a spade. “A person without an address that now takes up residence in Bangor for any various reasons that brought them here”. I can’t imagine for the life of me what would bring a person to Bangor from away that doesn’t have a job. Can you?

  3. Where are all the people that posted the other day, on the story of the guy arrested in Orono for drug possession, that they were not required by law to give their names if asked by police.

    1. You don’t have to provide ID, unless you are operating a vehicle. If you are just walking along and a cop says: “GIMMIE YO ID!” you don’t have to. As far as telling them things, you don’t have to answer any of their questions, ever. Sure, its not a great way to make friends with the boys in blue and you might get smacked up in the changing room at the jail, but… there is a price one pays for everything.

It’s one thing to not give your name. Its another to lie.

Also note he apparently was not charged for the alleged assault.

      1. I just did a little research and Title
28-A, §2087: Refusal to provide proper identification does require you to provide your ID in cases involving alcohol. Also The U.S. Supreme Court is upholding new state laws that require a person  to provide identification, or at least provide your name, such as in Nevada. This seems to be due to the anti-terrorism effort. While I don’t think we should be living in a communist state that requires us to carry papers, I’m wondering what laws help law enforcement in running a persons name for a warrant check. I guess the bottom line is that if you have nothing to hide let the popo know who you are.

  4. Another Homeless person shipped to us via the extravagant give aways that Bangor has become famous for.It used to be that these folks would head south for the winter but now they know that they can’t do any better than what they get here.No we don’t need any welfare reform.
