WATERVILLE, Maine — A man arrested by Waterville police on Oct. 11 has escaped police custody in Kansas.

Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said Elm City police received a teletype Tuesday from El Paso County in Colorado, where Deon Routt, 22, had been on probation for a sex offense.

Rumsey said Routt was being returned to Colorado from Maine on Monday afternoon when the private security company transporting him stopped to check on another prisoner in Lawrence, Kan.

During that stop, Routt pushed past a guard and escaped the vehicle, Rumsey said.

Rumsey said Waterville police received the teletype around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. He said Routt has family in the Waterville area, and it’s possible he could be heading back there.

“If anybody sees him, we would love a call,” Rumsey said, noting that Routt is 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds.

As a result of an anonymous tip, Routt was arrested by Waterville police on Oct. 11 for failing to register as a sex offender in Colorado.

    1.  like a hog tie huh   barbaric… unless the person is a violent offender!! the security guard…  needed to be a tad more diligent!!

      1. It’s the policy of the MDOC to shackle all prisoners ankles during any transport. And a sex crime can be pretty violent.

  1. Smooth move on the part of the security company.
Where did this perv get off to , anyway?
    Maybe a waiting car?
Ran into the bushes and hunkered down??
      Bizarre beyond words.

Ive got one word for the security company :
    ” You’re fired !!”
You can quote me on that.

  2. So privatization is supposed to be better than letting government entities handle transportation. If this is an example of that, I think not.

  3. He was found about mid-afternoon today.  There was a small scandal because the community was not alerted to the details.  You can imagine what the Lawrence posters did with that!

          1. Oh my bad! I didn’t see the part of the story that wasn’t there.
You do realize the difference between date and time right? :-)

    1. Actually, Lawrence is a very interesting town with a lot going on.  It is a university town, has a great downtown with many historical buildings.  There is good shopping, restaurants, the Kansas University atmosphere, sports, and it is also minutes from the greater Kansas City area.  It wouldn’t be a bad place to land at all!  I choose to go there frequently! Forget stereotypes, they really don’t work in real life.

      1. I was kidding, I’ve been there as well. I have an a business associate who lives there. Last summer was  a tough one out there-super hot. People are great-very down to earth.
