BANGOR, Maine — Two officers responded to a business alarm at the New Waverly bar at Merchants Plaza early Tuesday and watched as a man stuffed his pockets with cigarettes, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Wednesday.
“They observed a man inside the bar area putting cigarettes in his pockets and rummaging through the cash register, taking a cup of change with him,” the sergeant said in a statement. “As the man attempted to leave, both officers waited at the door for him as he exited.”
Matthew D. Burrill, 31, of Bangor was arrested at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday by Officers Joe Page and Kim Donnell and charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft. He was taken to the Penobscot County Jail and remained there Wednesday morning, Edwards said.
All of the stolen items were returned to the owner. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)

Well, if he gets any jail time, the positive thing is, he will have a chance to quit smoking — as I understand it you can no longer smoke in jail???
You can if your smart enough to get away with, several inmates did when i worked there a few years back. Never got caught, but was told that they did it to another individual who reported it to Glenn Ross, and Ross said do your job and put them in max, no longer there since Ross can not do his job
He won’t be asking if “Can I bum a butt?” in Prison. That might not work out in his benefit.
Ok, place your bets. He has a diagnosis for ADD, or receives benefits for a mood disorder, or is receiving taxpayer funded treatment for an addiction and takes methadone. What he is is a common no good thief, but think of all the job security DHHS, state psychologists, case workers, methadone clinics, and others get if we label him with a disability.
