BOSTON — A Massachusetts fisherman has caught a creepy-looking lobster that’s colored to match Halloween.
The New England Aquarium says the 1-pound female lobster has an orange side and a black side, with the colors split perfectly down the middle.
Marine officials say such coloration is estimated to occur once in every 50 million lobsters.
The fisherman who caught the seasonally colored crustacean in a trap last week is from Beverly, a seaside community 20 miles northeast of Boston.
The rare lobster is known as a split. Aquarium officials said Wednesday splits have been caught in Maine, Rhode Island and Nova Scotia in the last 10 years.

Must be because of global warming.
Or maybe it was Lepage’s fault.
Or quite possibly it was Bush’s fault.
I would say…….all three.
You beat me to it……
So true…LOL
My work here is done !
Odd, comment, that, YowsaYowsaYowsa.
I was thinking it is a good testament to nearly a century of strict, but workable conservation
laws in most (our paht) of the Gulf of Maine that we are seeing a fine and seasonally fun
example of 1 in every 50 million lobsters.
More forward thinking like was done with the lobster stock which has proven to define the State of Maine as being special and a little smarter than average is needed now at the start of this new century, too.
Now, in the Information Age, it is about doing more with less energy while maintain a high quality of life.
Why does the party of no compromise oppose that ?
Must have been caught in the waters by the Plymouth nuke plant…
Could also have been the Salem sewage treatment plant. I sailed out of there a few times and apparently the effluent is/was discharged out a ways into the bay. Get this, some of the bright local lads used to put out a few lobster pots and sell them to people who didn’t know where they came from.
jeeeeeesssss, them there traps are for the flatlanders…
That must’ve been a while ago. I believe that Salem is under the same rules as Boston: The water has to be technically safe to drink (EEWWW!) before it can be discharged, in Boston’s case 14 miles out to sea. This lobster probably grew up under the old rules! :)
You’re probably right about the new rules. Yes it was a while ago. My experience was back in the 80’s. I can still remember these guys hawking lobster around the docks. “Oh, lobster, where did you get them?” “We keep a few traps out in the bay here.” “Do you mean there by the treatment plant outlet?” “Yup. I guess they find plenty to eat around that area.” The guy on the boat next to ours bought a bunch and threw a party. We were invited but,”sorry, I’ve got to take care of some business that day.” Nobody got sick that I know of so hey, maybe it was OK ha ha ha. I was just there for a few weeks and didn’t really like Salem too much. There was a power plant next door to the marina which burned coal. The coal was delivered by freighter and when they unloaded all the coal dust blew down on the marina coating everything, including our sailboat. What a mess.
AH the 80’s, just when the Feds ordered a decade long clean up of the swamp called Boston Harbor! The days of clammers not caring about Red Tide warnings. Good decision on the lobster party!
We only drop by Salem every 5 years or so for another look at the old buildings on the way to Ipswitch for clams ’cause we’d rather get our seafood fix in New Bedford.
OH! I believe that coal plant is due for demo in the next year or so to return the 30 odd acres of waterfront to piers and parks. Did you know that ‘the wrong side of the tracks’ comes from being downwind of the old coal locomotives and fuel storage? My 2nd grade teacher told us how she’d hang out her wash just to have an unscheduled puff by! :)
I wonder if when she and her husband fought and she stormed out if he called after her “Dont go off half cooked”
Ba dum dum Thank you, Thank you, Im here all week…
Bravo! Thank you for a good laugh. A great career awaits you on stage.
fools, they only cooked half of it…
Figure out how to do that and collect a prize.
A calico lobster!
You really do gotta wonder if polution or something with the environment is causing this. Before last year i had never seen anything other than a red lobster. I had seen some extremely large ones down in New Hampshire. Then they posted the Blue Lobster, the Orange Lobster, and the Calico Lobster, all in the past year, and now one appears just before Halloween and is colored in Halloween colors…Very strange..The only other thing to wonder is if someone is somehow coloring these things with Food Coloring or a dye and then saying they caught them….Stranger things have happened???
I saw a couple folks who looked like that at the Halloween party last Saturday after last call!
