STARKS, Maine — Maine State Police detectives and other responders are investigating a shooting Wednesday in which a Starks man was injured.
The shooting occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m., a state police dispatcher confirmed Wednesday evening.
“We don’t have a lot to release right now,” Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department said about 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
He confirmed that the victim is Kerry Hebert, whom he described as being in his late 50s. He also confirmed that the incident did not appear to be hunting-related.
“What I will tell you is that this is our case,” Lancaster said. “There were hunters involved and there was a landowner involved. There were gentlemen involved that were hunting [but] this was not a hunting accident.”
As of late Wednesday night, no one had been charged in connection with the shooting, Lancaster said. He said that the information gathered during the investigation will be presented to the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine if charges will be filed.
Lancaster said that investigators were still at the scene collecting evidence and actively working the case and that they would be working late into the night, if not into Thursday morning.
Doug Rafferty, spokesman for the Maine Warden Service, also said Wednesday night that the incident was not hunting-related.
“It’s an assault, not a hunting accident,” Rafferty said Wednesday night.
According to Lancaster, the shooting occurred near the intersection of Mount Hunger and Mayhew roads. Hebert was taken from his property there to a landing zone set up at Madison High School. From there, he was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, the chief deputy said.
Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said Wednesday night that a team of state police detectives and game wardens went to the scene to assist the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
Though McCausland did not identify the victim, he said that the condition of the man who was shot improved over the evening.

Maine needs to make it mandatory for hunters to receive written permission from land owners to hunt there property and also to walk and know the land prior hunting! There are way too many dogs, farm animals and people shot by hunters each year. I’ve owned guns and hunted most of my life and could never mistake a person, cow, horse or a dog for a deer! Adopt these basic rules for hunting, know the land your hunting, buildings roads etc. wear bright orange vest and hat, know where your hunting partners are and “never” pull the trigger unless you know exactly what you are shooting at and have clear unobstructed view!

Ah-yup, shooting someone, then saying they shouldn’t wear white on their own land and not except to get shot, IS very a different matter.
This does seem to have a lot to do with how many hunters act as if they own the State and have no respect for others, and their rights.
Especially, others property rights.
Good safe hunters need to pick sides properly, say who is really wrong here,
or just accept it IS the crazy, gun toting yahoos and speed demons tearing it up,
all year long on one machine or another, who have become the face of
Maine’s outdoors men.
I hate to go further here because the facts surrounding the case are not known, but, IF this was a landowner who asked someone to leave his premises and got shot for his trouble, then the shooter is not a hunter, but a criminal (and not a very good one at that). A crimnal commits a criminal act, and now we can chastise the entire hunting community and call for a ton of restrictions for law abiding hunters? I repeat my earlier comment:

I was not trying to make it out to be anything other than what it was, a shooting. I don’t know what happened, it sounded like it might have been a confrontation between a land owner and hunters. I was expressing my opinion on ways to help prevent someone else being shot over a trespassing issue or hunting accidents by revamping and clarifying laws for both land owners and hunters.
I was pointing out that if the extremist fringe, the yahoos are all that are heard
if the responsible refuse to admit they are screwing up, too, by both not speaking up about how some hunters act, and not clearly drawing the line about what proper behavior is, our traditions will go by the boards.
How many land owners are reading this and thinking it’s better to post their land ?
It is not really all hunters against everyone else … as the NRA, would make it for their own reasons… and it will end with buying permits to hunt on others people’s land, like in The Republic of Tejas if the bad apples are not culled.
Respect landowners rights
Out of staters have a hard time doing that. They also are notorious for jacking deer and getting caught.
My family has owned and operated sporting camps since 1920. We have never had a single incident involving poaching or disregard for landowner rights from non-residents. Actually, they have all seemed to be quite pleasant.

As a matter of fact 2 polite young fellas from CT shot a nice buck on my unposted 50 acres while I was sleeping and woke me up to ask permission to use an ATV to retrieve it. their are more mainers poaching- and not for food I may add-than most people think. look at the dillwads over Ripley and the Turner gang.
The Ripley poachers last name was Kwasnieski. That is far from being a typical Maine name. Yes I am stereotyping.

A landowner has a right to tell people not to hunt on his property, and shouldn’t get shot or injured because of it! Incidents like this one are exactly why so many people have a negative view of hunters.
Yes, he certainly does, but I suspect this was more than just trespassing because it’s scary to think it was just that.
Press herald says he told the guy to get off his property and the “hunter” told him he’d been hunting there for 20 some years. And then he assaulted the landowner and shot him.
That guy needs to do some serious jail time, not just get a slap on the wrist like lobstermen do when they shoot each other.

Given recent intel elsewhere on this site about what goes on in Maine’s prison system lately, you may wish to reconsider your use of the phrase “give him his last butt”. Or, on second thought, you may not.

This reminds me of the story when some out-of-state hunters attacked a Maine landowner because the landowner found their trucks on his property and jammed on the steering wheel (to activate the horn). They kicked in his door and beat the snot out of him if i recall.
Wonder if the hunter is a local or not. This smells remarkably like the hunter didnt like being told to f— off private property. People like that will ensure that more and more land is posted off-limits to recreation.

The thought process there is truly special. I mean, there’s a regular mortal lack of foresight and then there’s being able to think, “There! I have shot the person who was bothering me. Obstruction removed. Now, on with my day as planned.” A man’s got to be a real piece of Samsonite not to realize instinctively that that’s not going to work out.
