ROCKPORT, Maine — A 21-year-old man is back behind bars after police said he stole a car and was caught carrying a loaded handgun.

Victor J. Pendleton was arrested Thursday morning and charged by Rockport police with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, operating after suspension and violating a condition of release, according to Rockport Police Officer and Administrative Assistant Craig Cooley.

Pendleton had been released two days ago from the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset after serving time for car theft, according to Cooley.

The incident began Thursday morning when a Jefferson resident reported the theft of a Jeep Cherokee. Forty-five minutes later, shortly before 10 a.m., Rockport Police Chief Mark Kelley stopped the vehicle. Pendleton was found with the loaded handgun hidden under his sweatshirt, Cooley said.

Cooley and Maine State Police Trooper Pat Hood responded to the scene and assisted in the case.

Cooley said police are seeking the public’s help in determining who the owner of the gun is. Police said it was a handgun and may have been taken from the Augusta area where Pendleton was from, Cooley said. He said Pendleton claims to have moved to Belfast. Police suspect the gun was stolen in the two days since Pendleton was released from jail.

  1. Doesn’t learn a thing so he is obviously going to be a career criminal. Maine really needs a 3 strike law and keep criminals off our streets. His family must be so proud. Then again maybe he just wants room and board for the winter. Sharp as a tack he isn’t. But then again one has to have a conscience to have remorse and obviously he is missing brain cells. Lose the key on his cell because it is not safe to have him roaming the streets. Lucky he did not shoot himself in the foot, an innocent person or LEO.

  2. There really are compulsive car thiefs.   Known a couple and they’re just strange — steal a car and tool around like Giddy Haha til it runs out of gas and then walk again.  Going to jail is just a little pit stop til the next ‘hot box.’  This character, hmm, never set eyes on him and don’t know anybody who does know him, but that pistol in the belt says he ready to climb on the Hellbound Train…

  3. I’m sure we’ll be seeing this goons name in the news quite a bit until something very bad happens and he goes away for good.

I’m very glad he did not do something stupid with that pistol. At least not that we know of yet.
