BANGOR and PRESQUE ISLE – Melodie Glidden Mannix passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, in Bangor, after a brief illness. Born Dec. 25, 1944, in Presque Isle, she was the daughter of Harold and Duska Glidden.
A 1963 graduate of Presque Isle High School, she went on to obtain a degree from Chamberlain School of Retailing, Boston. After graduation Melodie spent her early years in retail as a fashion purchaser for Filene’s, Boston, and later Diamond’s Department stores, Phoenix. She moved back to her hometown in the late 1970s and worked for the family business, D&D Agency, until the mid-1980s. After that Melodie decided to put her love of children to work and became a speech aide, working at the Zippel, Gouldville, and Pine Street elementary schools in Presque Isle. She went back to college at the University of Maine at Presque Isle as a part-time student in 1991 to further her career as a speech clinician. She eventually devoted herself to studies full time and enrolled at the University of Maine, Orono, in 1993. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in speech language pathology in 1995 and her master’s degree in 1997. Melodie then practiced as a speech language pathologist at Griffiths Associates, Augusta, where she specialized in working with young children between the ages of 3 and 5. She spent nearly nine years there before moving on to the Warren Center, Bangor, working in the same specialty, before her eventual retirement in 2008. A devoted mother, sister and friend, Melodie enjoyed cooking, reading and creating needle art in her spare time. She always enjoyed the company of friends and family and was always willing to sacrifice for others.
Melodie is survived by her son, and her pride and joy, Jeffrey Glidden Mannix of Lewiston; her sister, Tamia Glidden of Presque Isle; her brother, William Flint Glidden of Roswell, Ga.; her niece, Duska Rachel Glidden of Roswell, Ga.; as well as numerous cousins.
