Comings and Goings: The national parties appear to have bailed on Maine’s Senate race, withdrawing their advertising. Meanwhile, groups tied to former George W. Bush strategist Karl Rove and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg have kept at it. The King-supporting Americans Elect is spending the rest of its $1.75 million ($500,000 of which is from Bloomberg) on ads and mailers while Rove’s Crossroads GPS recently launched another $348,000 anti-King ad campaign. On a smaller scale, another Republican super PAC, Safe Nation PAC, tried its luck on a mailer boosting Democratic candidate Cynthia Dill in an effort to peel Democratic support away from King, and then started airing pro-Summers radio ads. And the International Association of Firefighters started a pro-King radio ad campaign.
No PAC Mentality: In a record-breaking year for outside campaign spending, Maine has been left largely out of the money when it comes to outside spending on its U.S. House races. The Federal Election Commission lists $50.80 in independent expenditures for the 1st District race between Democratic incumbent Chellie Pingree and Jon Courtney. The committee to re-elect Ohio U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who lost a Democratic primary in March, spent the money on Pingree’s behalf Thursday for “emails.”
Maine’s 2nd District contest between incumbent Democrat Mike Michaud and Republican Kevin Raye has garnered, to date, a single outside spending hit of $11,308 by the National Federation for Independent Businesses to buy online ads for Raye. While not an independent expenditure, the National Republican Congressional Committee this week contributed $82,000 to Raye’s campaign to jointly pay for more airtime for a Raye ad featuring U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Also-Ran for Also-Running: The Republicans’ 2008 presidential nominee, U.S. Sen. John McCain, is encouraging Maine voters to back Republican U.S. Senate candidate Charlie Summers. Summers’ campaign recently started calling voters with a recorded phone call from the Arizona senator. McCain describes Summers as a “fellow Navy veteran” and “just the kind of senator Maine and America needs.”
Completing the Pair: Former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson, R-Wyo., announced his backing Wednesday for independent U.S. Senate candidate Angus King. Simpson’s endorsement for King came more than a month after his colleague, Erskine Bowles, endorsed King and visited Maine to co-host a town hall with him focused on the national debt. Simpson and Bowles, a former chief of staff to President Bill Clinton, crafted the eponymous Simpson-Bowles deficit reduction plan. The pair have endorsed both Republicans and Democrats this election cycle who have expressed support for their debt reduction plan.
More Than Double: Outside spending on Maine’s legislative races crossed the $3.4 million mark on Friday, with a weekend to go before the election. That’s well more than double the amount of record-setting outside spending from all of 2010: $1.5 million. The top race for third-party spending continued to be the Senate District 32 race between Republican Sen. Nichi Farnham and Democrat Geoffrey Gratwick. Outside groups had spent $439,000 on that race as of mid-afternoon Friday, according to the Maine Ethics Commission. For context, about 36,500 people live in a Maine Senate district, so that’s about $12 per Bangor and Hermon resident.
GOP Dream or Reality?: Is the electoral vote that belongs to Maine’s 2nd Congressional District really in play? Two polls released Friday show it could be competitive. Gravis Marketing on Friday released poll results that show President Barack Obama with a 3 percentage point lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney in the 2nd District, 50-47 percent. Three percent of the poll respondents remain undecided. Another poll released Friday, from Public Policy Polling, showed Obama leading Romney 51-46 in the 2nd District. In late October, a pro-Romney political action committee purchased ads targeted at Maine’s 2nd District. Maine’s Electoral College vote distribution system would allow Romney to claim one vote if he wins the 2nd District, but loses the overall state vote. Gravis reported conducting an automated survey of 509 likely 2nd District voters on Thursday and Friday. The Florida-based firm reports the poll’s margin of error at plus or minus 4.3 percent. Speaking of Poll Results: Friday’s Public Policy Polling results showed independent U.S. Senate candidate Angus King leading Maine’s Senate race by 14 points. King pulled in 50 percent support to Republican Charlie Summers’ 36 percent and Democrat Cynthia Dill’s 12 percent. PPP also surveyed Maine voters on Question 1, the same-sex marriage referendum, and found voters 52-45 in support and 3 percent undecided. That’s similar to the 52-44 margin the firm found in September. In a tweet, PPP predicted a close vote on same-sex marriage, as voters who are undecided in polls tend to vote against same-sex marriage. Read the full poll results.

Under the Bush-Cheney administration:
1. There was significant intel/chatter that something was up before 9/11. No extra measures were taken despite warnings – they were ignored.
2. Trumped up, phony evidence that Iraq had WMDs that gave a pretense to go to war. Yep, created a whole new batch of bretheren vets – dead, wounded, lives ruined, families screwed up…
3. Remember George Dubya’s “Mission Accomplished”? Right, we cut through the Iraqi military with relative ease, but with no plan about how to reorganize the country afterward. Bush-Cheney created more terrorists than we killed, ruined Iraq, created conditions that led to hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians dead and wounded, spent a he.. of a lot of our own blood and treasure, contributed to the destabilization of the region, empowered Iran, and reduced our influence.
4. Blew a chance to get Osama Bin Laden early because so many resouces were committed to Iraq rather than Afghanistan, which should have been our #1 target.

1. The attack was on a Consulate, not an Embassy. Security at Consulates is much less than at Embassies.
2. There is an on-going investigation about what happened and if you got your information from sources other than Fox “News” (what an oxymoron) and the neo-con media, you would know that the facts are still unfolding. If, as you imply, you are a combat vet (are you, or are you posturing?), then you ought to know about confusion during and in the aftermath of a battle.
Furthermore, if things go wrong, there always are claims, counter-claims, and finger-pointing. In the current political climate too many people would rather speculate and condemn, rather than wait for an organized review.
3. There are legitimate questions about Benghazi, but your words and accusations have no current basis in fact. They merely parrot the political talking points of the far right. When the facts are in, then we all can form opinions based on evidence, not conjecture.

1. Romney is a chamelion, who tells each audience what they want to hear. Do you know what he really believes?

The reality is that in any human population there is roughly 5% the will not contribute and look for ways to avoid work. The fact that 95% of our population want to work and the people who are working are more productive and being paid less clearly demonstrates that fact. You can prove it to yourself. place an ad for a job that pays $50K with benefits and you’ll get 5,000 applications.
If the republicans believed the trickle down nonsense they peddle they we would have a surplus of high paying jobs. Their tax cuts and deregulation and destruction of unions has produced the opposite. People are working harder with more stress for less pay. The only thing we have to show for the $10 trillion dollar tax cuts is $25 trillion parked off shore. The only people making any money are the hedge funds and vulture capitalist and they are not creating value, their cashing in on existing value.
Nobody except the tea people want to change our economic system. We just want it to work for everyone. It was only 40 years ago that we were talking about a 4 day work week and a minimum of 6 weeks paid vacation for workers. That’s what we should be talking about today and we would be if workers were standing up for themselves instead of collaborating with the 1%. It’s not socialism to demand a fair days pay for a fair days work.

International competition from non-unionized jobs is forcing wages lower everywhere else. The loss of jobs in the US is not all cheap labor. I know the paper industry well and I know that in Maine it was lost to the lack of investment in new technology. America’s loss was not to China it was to northern Europe, all union, with taxes and regulation. Unskilled jobs may go overseas, but high tech jobs are not lost to labor cost. It is simply good old fashion completion. The profits taken by Wall St. is prohibiting investment.
Your delusion is that we can allow the people at the top to take such huge profits for increasing risk and less investment. The tax cuts did nothing to help the economy in the 10 years they have been in effect.
There is a social undercurrent to this electorate which will act as a riptide. Mainers are sick of being dis-respected and pushed into political corners. They’re sick of Big Money on both sides, they’re sick of the elected officials who choose to respect countries who will add political feathers to their red and blue hats instead of respecting Mainers. Let’s bring it all home, Maine! Please add your votes to mine for Governor Romney.

I think you need to brush up on macroeconomics and learn something about globalization. There 5 billion potential customers in the world, many are in expanding economies. They will need our products and expertise. We can benefit from globalization, but not if we let companies make billions and park it offshore. We are the only company in the world that allows US companies to avoid paying taxes on overseas profits.
This election is in the hands of Mainers now.
