HOWLAND, Maine — Tracy Grehowski used to take strolls through downtown, but she stopped her nightly ambles when two men were brutally beaten on Caron Drive and River Road on Aug. 17.

It’s been 2½ months since the incident, and a Penobscot County grand jury indicted the four men charged in connection with the attack on Wednesday, but the Howland resident said she has no plans to resume her evening walks.

“People are still afraid to go out at night. You don’t know what’s lurking around you in the woods here anymore,” Grehowski said Friday. “It’s not like it used to be. Everybody gets their walking in before dark now.”

Several residents and town leaders interviewed Friday said they felt the same way. Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies charged with patrolling the town and state police have stepped up their efforts and made their presence felt since the attack, they said, but there’s still some uncertainty about just how safe the town is.

“It is more awareness than fear. If anybody was getting complacent about how things could go, this unfortunate incident brought people back to the unfortunate reality that terrible things can go wrong even in a small town,” Glenn Brawn, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, said Saturday.

The outrage over the incident and other related crimes t hat fueled an angry town meeting at Hichborn Middle School attended by 200 people on Aug. 28 has abated somewhat, Town Manager Jane Jones said, but concern remains.

“At this point, people are waiting for the criminal justice system to run its course,” Jones said. “They are hopeful that the case will be solved quickly. However, not enough time has passed so that the root causes [of the incident] have gone away.”

State police said in an affidavit that the fight started over money used to buy beer instead of drugs. Residents who attended the public meeting called by town selectmen complained of drug activity, burglaries and other crimes that culminated in severity with the brutal assault.

Friday, all residents interviewed agreed that the sheriffs have definitely made their presence felt since the incident.

“They are making themselves known every day, way more than they used to,” said Shalee Sibley, a 28-year-old Burlington resident who works as a clerk at Bridge Street Market, a convenience store about two miles from downtown. “They want people to know that they are here and doing their jobs.”

“I think they have done a wonderful job. We will see what happens with the court case. I am very satisfied with the [police] coverage that Howland gets,” Brawn said.

“You never used to see them. Now you see them all the time,” said one woman, who asked that her name not be used.

A few people interviewed asked that their names be withheld, fearing possible retribution. Several others said they distantly knew the young men charged in connection with the crime and didn’t want to speak ill of them. All people interviewed declined to be photographed or videotaped.

Sibley said that many residents responded with compassion to the assault by donating to fundraisers that helped the victims — two men ages 30 and 31 — defray their medical costs.

A prosecutor said the 30-year-old victim suffered 80 facial fractures and will need extensive reconstructive surgery. The 31-year-old suffered a broken eye socket, several broken ribs and lost several teeth to the beating, state police said.

The Bangor Daily News is not identifying the injured men because they are apparent victims in the assault and have not been charged with any crimes.

In the wake of the attack, selectmen authorized the town to allocate $12,000 to extra police patrols. Those patrols are still occurring, Jones said.

Selectmen eventually hope to hold more public meetings and organize a community watch program that will get residents involved with policing their community. That likely will occur within a few months, Jones said.

    1. Bad news.  This story is under or not reported in most towns small towns in Maine (& yes, pretty much everywhere else as well.)   An unfortunate fact of life. Small town justice?  Maybe  a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. These animals got away w/it for too long.  Can only hope that there is indeed some justice coming their way when they run into a bigger bully w/in prison.

  1. is this the case of people getting beat up because they bought booze instead of drugs with other peoples money? why try to make howland sound like NYC over this? mountains and molehills, maybe…

    1. That’s what I was just saying.  It was a drug money-related attack-not a random act of violence.  Now people are afraid to go out at night?  I don’t get it.

  2. It’s going to take a community watch ‘plan’ to resolve this issue.  This is a rural area and police
are stretched thin.  $12,000 in additional patrols is nothing.    Glad they are more present but peer/neighbor pressure is needed.   Report the little SOBs if they are breaking the law.  Send the message that they will not get away with it.   You make them sound like a bunch of thugs that have taken over the town.

  3. The problem is the punishments today never fit the crimes!  There are way too many known repeat drug dealers, child molesters, rapist, murderers and scum bags that have been released and wandering the streets in Maine and through out the country.  The bleeding hearts who release these scum bags back into society and call them rehabilitated need to be held accountable for there actions after released!

  4. Until judges and DAs grow backbones, and until parents stay married and sober and actually raise their offspring, Maine will continue to drown in violent crime.  It’s a hick state whose logo should be a pit bull with a cigarette hanging out of  its mouth.

    1. jdtex, I’m not sure that I’ve ever “liked” any comment you’ve posted and I’m so sad to say that this one is spot on.

        1.  Givrsum,

You have to consider, he is a relative of the 2 brothers!! :)  Of course he would say that they are loving!!!  They have taught him well!! Unfortunately, sad but true!!

    2.  Are you serious? Maine is not “drowning in violence”. I’m so tired of people acting like Maine is a terrible place. Yet I see you trolling the BDN just waiting to put people down. I know stories like this seem bad but not when you compare it to the rest of the country. It’s true that there are more drug related crimes now but nothing compared to other places. I used to live in Killeen TX, there was more crime in that one town than the entire state of Maine. “Stay Married and sober? Ever been to Mississippi? It’s not a problem with Maine, not the States fault, or the governments, it’s a humanity problem. Maine still has the lowest crime rate and is rated as the #6 best state to live in America. A smart man once said: “You know why the world looks like crap? Cause you walk around with your head up your rectum.”

  5. well as long as your not buying yourself beer with your buddy’s drug money,, the howland streets are still pretty darn safe. lol.

  6. these are my uncles and i would hate for them to go away yes they did wrong but i mean come on show some love

    1.  Are you kidding?? They deserve about 15 years in jail. Their parents should have left them in jail.

    2. They should of thought of that then, it’s about time we make examples of these so called tough guys. Yes, bring them to me. Never mind the judge!

    3. christian they may be your uncles and i’m sure they can also be loving. but they committed a horrible act of violence and need to be punished for it. 2 people were nearly beaten to death, so they showed no love there. i understand you feel bad because they are related to you and it’s hard to see someone you love in trouble but they chose their own paths. if it was one of them that was nearly beaten to death you would have a different opinion. don’t get on here and read all these posts because it will drive you crazy. just chose a different path than your uncles did. stay away from drugs and anyone involved in them. and hope that once they do their time they change their lives as well

  7. i have traveled and live in many parts of the country. the worst communities to live in are communities with alot of minorities  and communities with alot of irish.  yes irish, here is a question, name the only white ghetto in new england? south boston. majority  irish

        1. Irish surnames are common in United States because of the huge historical Irish immigration and it doesn’t make people who have those names Irish

    1. Maybe you just don’t know how to cook a potato?  The Irish helped build this coutry,  and then you had cooks….

      1. in 190o, the majority of criminals in the usa were  irish people ,
police wagons that carried prisoners got nicknamed ‘paddy wagons’
paddy because the wagons was always filled with irish

        1. I think your mistaken.  While it maybe true that there were some “Irish criminals”  back 1900,  we have to understand why.  The Irish moved here mostly because of the potato famine of the mid 1700s.  They came here with absolutely nothing,  and got to work building rail lines and such.  Very low wage.  Then the Civil War,  and with that the draft.  If you were a wealthy Englishmen,  you could pay $300.00, and be spared the horrors of the civil war.  The Irish didn’t like this.  They felt everyone should fight,  rich and poor.  So they protested, (rioted), against this travesty.  So many were beaten and indeed jailed,  making them your criminal.  It was around this time, (1863) the term “paddy wagon was coined.

        2. Yeah well going on your brilliant stereotype- then ALL German people are evil (WWI and WWII), ALL religious people are evil (all of the killings that have occured in the name of religion), ALL Italians are evil (mafia), ALL men are evil (they commit far more violent crimes than females), etc….as all of these are ridiculous stereotypes.  Clearly being a chef requires little education or knowledge (other than chopping and boiling things) of how the world works.  What a sad uneducated joke you are….now go watch a pot boil.

  8. The Deputies are doing a good job..I for one am not scared of some pill poppin lil pecker wets. They need to be scared of me…Just 2 worthless punks..I drop off better men in the toilet every morning before work…They are less than nothing to me..

  9. This wasn’t a random attack on an innocent resident-it was a fight over drug money.  Maybe I’m sounding callous or don’ t know the whole story, but do community members really have a reason to be this fearful now?

  10. These four ‘men’ need to go away for a very, very long time.  I think it is sad that the McKinnon brothers and Gardner were all bailed out by their parents.  So now those three are out walking about waiting for their trial-lovely.  Shame on the enabling parents of these three losers.  My kid would still be sitting in jail until his trial.  Welcome to natural consequences and personal responsibility as an adult.  Shame on the parents for bailing these three simpletons out.
