Poll reversal

Although Gallup polling data since Oct. 1 show Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney pulling ahead of President Barack Obama among likely voters nationally, at least two recent Gallup surveys offer good news for the incumbent Democratic president. A 10-point favorability measure released Thursday rated Obama at 62 percent and Romney at 55 percent. A s urvey of whom respondents think will win favored Obama 54 percent to 34 percent. In recent presidential elections, both of these polls have had a good track record of predicting a winner, according to Gallup.

Departures and arrivals

U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe and Angus King, the former governor hoping to replace her in the U.S. Senate, boarded the Amtrak Downeaster on Thursday for the passenger train’s maiden voyage from Portland to Freeport to Brunswick. In press releases, both politicians claimed some credit for the expansion of passenger rail service north of Portland. Snowe’s Senate office said the Republican fought to allow Maine to spend its federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality funds on the Downeaster. King’s campaign said the former governor worked for eight years to establish the Downeaster, which now stretches from Boston to Brunswick.

Sorry, Charlie

Sen. Snowe, whose impending retirement from the U.S. Senate rocked Maine’s political hierarchy and the national Republican establishment, campaigned for both Maine Republicans challenging incumbent Democrats in the state’s U.S. House districts over the past two weeks. She traveled with and made an ad for Kevin Raye and visited Portland businesses with Jon Courtney. Snowe traveled to Massachusetts last Monday to help Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown’s re-election effort. But she has remained conspicuously absent from campaign events for Charlie Summers, her former employee and the GOP’s nominee to succeed her in the Senate. Summers, citing his position as Maine’s secretary of state, did not endorse Snowe after more conservative candidates announced that they would challenge her in a primary earlier this election cycle when Snowe was still considering a run for re-election. That lack of loyalty apparently spurred Snowe to steer clear of Summers’ campaign.

Like father, like son

Adam Courtney, the son of Republican 1st Congressional District candidate Jon Courtney, is running as a Republican to represent Maine House District 143. Father and son will presumably vote for each other at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sanford, according to a release from Jon Courtney’s campaign.

NOM calling

Maine will be among six states targeted for National Organization for Marriage robocalls opposing same-sex marriage between now and Election Day. The effort aims to reach out to 10 million voters, according to a NOM release. Among the robotic voices at the other end of the line will be Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and James Dobson, longtime head of Focus on the Family. In addition to Mainers, residents of Maryland and Washington state, which are also holding referendums on same-sex marriage, and Wisconsin, Ohio and Pennsylvania, swing states in the presidential race. NOM has budgeted $500,000 for the campaign.

Wild fantasy

As Election Day nears, Angus King is the most valuable Maine candidate in MTV’s Fantasy Election ’12, which allows players to select candidates who earn points based on honesty, transparency, engagement, public opinion and civility. With 7,463 points, King holds a commanding lead over Andrew Ian Dodge, an independent candidate who’s still listed as a Republican on the MTV Fantasy Election ’12 website. Dodge has 3,000 points. Rep. Mike Michaud, a Democrat seeking re-election in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, is the only other candidate with a positive score: 1,177. All other Maine congressional candidates either rate a zero or a negative score. In the presidential contest, Republican challenger Mitt Romney topped President Barack Obama, a Democrat, on Friday by a score of 21,458 to 20,471.

      1. The way I used it’s, a contraction for it is, I was describing the choice.
People need to understand adjectives and brush up on grammar.

        1. You said Obama 2012.  It’s (it is) the only choice for ‘real’ people.

It refers directly to Obama so to you, Obama is an it.  Had you said vote for Obama, you would have been fine.

You refer to ‘real’ people as anyone that agrees with you making the rest of us, what?

Have a nice day.  I’ll be watching the news tonight to see what “it” does on the campaign trail while millions of New Yorkers are still without power, food, gas and housing.

          1.
I am voting for Obama. He represents real people. I am one of them.
It is the only vote my conscience will allow.

          2. It looks like a reelected President Obama (with about 307 electoral votes) will be welcoming new liberal New England Senators, King, Warren and Murphy.

It seems, instead of losing senate seats in a year when twice as many Democratic seats as Republican ones are up for election, we’ll be gaining seats this year.

Thank you Tea Partiers for nominating some real gems as Republican candidates.

          3. This just in today:

Republican House Leaders Boehner and Cantor announced that if President Obama lets the Cliff law they (the Republican House) passed actually go into effect, they will be really steamed and won’t cooperate with him during a second term.

            Oooops.

Looks like they jumped the gun by a day or two on that “second term” thing.

P.S.  Like they were planning to cooperate anyway???

  1. A vote for Obama is a vote for four more years of the economic crap-sandwich that you have had to eat. Are you really that hungry for more?

    1. It’s easier to burn down a house than to rebuild it.

The GOP burned down our economy in a flash.

It takes a while to rebuild especially when the Republican Tea Party does nothing but obstruct those efforts.

Vote the Tea Party Republicans OUT, OUT, OUT!

    2. Look what lapage has done for maine  he has cause a lot of hate  .  I bet the only reason he wanted to be Gov. was so he could get a pension an free medical care for life .  Thats one thing that needs to be change that he could not collect a pension till he turns 65  an the same with medical care to  an that also should go for all people that work for the state. Now if they retire early then  they should lose money just like the rest of us would if we retire early  .

  2. Olympia won’t support Summers because of his prolife position.  Women voters, and men voters who have female family members, sit up and take notice and vote for ABC (Anybody But Charlie).

    1. Is it because he, like the rest of the crew which has taken control of the party, is more reactionary than conservative? Just askin’.

  3. This Presidential election offers the choice of two completely inverted theories of Government. One sends power up from the base and the other sends power down to the base.

The Power and Glory of self-serving politicians, all their sickening money and their polls will find unquiet resolution. Mainers, we know we are not willing participants in the hyperventilation and the traditional party lines used to lasso us into divided, tooth baring wolf packs.

Those of you who really like the effortlessness of the cradle to grave passivity of Big Government Trickle Down by all means use your constitutionally protected vote while you have it to re-elect Obama but don’t be surprised when you find yourselves abandoned, defenseless, quite alone and life threatened after a monster storm… for starters. Rest assured you will finally attain the change for which you have clamored by choosing this option.

Other Mainers will use their vote to elect the power-up option and the opportunity to self create themselves, their families, their communities and the country with Trickle Up Government under their control. Conservatives of either party understand this approach and know its promise to our childrenas the same gift we ourselves were bequeathed.

We are Mainers. In the big picture we want Freedom and Liberty to pursue our lives. Thepower is in our hands and it is urgent for all of us who feel the passion of our childrens’ futures (no matter previous party affiliation) that we fearlessly unite as Mainers for them with our votes for Governor Romney.

(I reserve the right to reply only to posters who can develop my comment with civil, positive replies.)

  4. Snowe took the train with Angus King–sounds as though she is snubbing Charlie Summers even more.   Olympia is on the same “track, ” so to speak, as King,  anyway, so her joint effort on the train is not surprising to this conservative!  It was not the lack of bipartisanship that made her resign–have you read the latest lawsuit still going on for her husband, Jock McKernan?
Obama’s “Forward” movement is going to take us to a place where we will not recognize America as we have known her, if he gets four more years.

The full page ad againt Nichi Farnham in Saturday’s BDN is shameful, since those responsible knew very well that she had been exonerated by the Ethics Commission October 31, 2012, and they placed Oct. 31 dates in the ad.   Geoffrey Gratwick should be held accountable for this, but he will not be.

VOTE NO on QUESTION 1 Tuesday, November 6, and VOTE NO on all bond issues– Maine still has bond issues that are pending from past votes–be smart voters!

  5. Romney’s latest tax dodge has now been exposed by a Dutch newspaper. It appears the candidate sheltered Bain company’s ownership in an Irish company by setting up a Dutch company to hold the shares, effectively avoiding US capital gains taxes of roughly $100 million or more, in addition to significant Irish asset-based taxes. The least American voters could have expected from this presidential candidate is openness about his tax returns. What they got was secrecy and his audacity to  questioning his opponent’s patriotism.

    1. Try understanding tax policy..what he did was legal! also…there are no tax “cuts” only tax rates…since when you file this year..take NO deductions..I don’t want you feeling guilty!…but as a liberal. that won’t happen

      1. legal..  maybe… but morally correct for a “patriot”?  If the president had millions hidden from the IRS you would be fine with that, Fox news would be fine with that?
Anything your boy does is just fine, a win at all cost, from anyone without a sense of justice and fairness is still a “win” in your eyes.
I suppose you call yourself a capitalist first and a patriot second…

        1. Just out of curiosity, what was it about being in the service that made you feel differently than you do now?

        2. That’s exactly what happened to me.  I have no problem equating today’s liberalism with Marxism.  Anyway, thanks for your Service.

        1. Jesus told people to pay their taxes (“rend unto Caesar that which is his.”) He told us not to value money over the well-being of our fellow humans.

Jesus wouldn’t have supported throwing trillions in tax dollars at the Pentagon for weapons and war-making. He would supported Universal Health Care.

        2. You need to bone up on your Christian myths there Keith…
Jesus was a liberal dark skinned (not this blond european dude) Arab Jew who was put to death by the conservative church for challenging their authority and claiming to be the son of God, along with his rising popularity.  He was put the death not “by” the Romans but by the local govt who convinced the Romans that he would cause “problems” in the local community. The Romans were simply stooges of the conservative govt in place, remember the Romans “washed” their hands of it.

  6. Any person who can vote for Obama really needs to think about what they are doing to the generations before them. They are the people who fought, worked, built, and defended the Constitution of this Great Nation. A vote for Obama is a vote to disregard everything they have done. It actually is a slap in the face to all of them.
Like JFK said; think not what your Country can do for you, but what you can do for this Country.
Personally I can not understand how anyone that truly loves this Country can vote for Obama.

    1. I’m voting for Obama because of those who fought and built this country to honor and preserve what they did.

          1. 496 generals, admirals and upper brass endorsed Romney.5 endorsed Obama not made up get out of your parents basement the kook-aid is getting deep.

      1. Wolfndeer,  That is about the phoniest, most disingenuine statement I have ever heard from anybody in my life.  Obama’s role models were either communists or communist sympathizers in his highschool and college years.  And he hasn’t drifted far since.  Please don’t insult America’s real patriots with your stupid comments.

  7. With the news out of Gorham no on 1 should easily win. Most all the bond issues will pass.I still believe Dill will pull enough away from anguish to give summers the edge. Also Romney will be our next president.

        1. Fortunately, even with your Chicken Little “the sky is falling!” hyperbole, you only get your one vote.

      1. We’re not counting chickens, we’re counting votes, we’re counting $1.3 trillion deficits,we’re counting  the number of foreclosures, we’re counting the number of business’ that have closed their doors, and all the business’ that WILL close their doors if BO gets a second term, we’re counting the number of unfullfilled promises made by obama, we’re counting the true unemployment number of 14.6% ,we’re counting all the disenchanted ’08 voters that bought this snake oil, speaking of oil we’re counting $4 a gallon. Mostly we’re counting the days, hours, and minutes to January 20,2013.

      1. Thanks for the compliment.

Just as the”typical democract’s” only goal will be to get Romney out of the White House. Only problem with that concept, they’ll be out-flanked by Romney. Just like Reagan did to all of his detractors. How?  By keeping their campaign promises and implementng their plans.

        1. The one fact you can count on with a Romney plan …. is the fact that it is never the same the following day. Both Romney and Ryan after tomorrow will have been tried and found wanting along with the twisted extreme ideology of what the Republican party has become …….well it’s either back to the drawing board or a padded room while sporting a straight jacket for the rightly righteous right.

          1. Slendid idea you just gave me for the next big growth industry under a Romney administration.
Anger management counseling for all the Libs.

          2. It’s really simple …. the facts of the Right do indeed sound angry … and they are, me …I’m  just stating the facts.  :)

          3. NO…the facts on the right are acurate which is to say they’re right….and the opposite of right is wrong, that’s a fact

          4. You delude yourself Colby there’s a butt load wrong with it and you’ll be getting a schooling in that the day after next.

          5. Facts….all i see is a rant of “extreme twisted ideology bla bla bla”…….sounds more angry than factual to me. Care to enroll in the anger managmet class i’ll be convening 11/07

          6. I think after tomorrow there will be many of your mind set who will be needing extreme counseling. Listen to that clock tick, it’s telling you an extreme Keiser kicking is only a few ticks away.

          1. Nothing has changed since the game of politics has been on earth. If you’re old enough to remember Walter Cronkite….he ended his nightly news progam saying…”And that’s the way it is”

          2. You know I miss the class act Mr Cronkite was. And yes truer words have never been spoken, along with…. it is what it is.

          3. Not a big fan of ….it is what it is….an over used  catch phrase for everything. The days of Cronkite, Huntley & Brinkley are in the rearview. Journalists should report the facts, all the facts, and nothing but the facts…….and leave their political views on a shelf both the left & the right.  And that’s the way it is!

  8. NO ON 1 Unless you want your high school to be gorham high school. It is bordering on criminal the under reporting on such a huge issue. The teaching of gay sex in high school should not be allowed especially without parent consent.

  9. Would like to commend the brave patriot standing on stillwater  ave in Old town sunday. thank you i will be voting for mom and dad.vote no on1

  10. It’s going to be a tough Wednesday for the Maine GOP, I’m pretty certain. Summers is not going to take King. Raye will give Michaud a run for his money but fall short. Courtney? Come on. Question 1 will pass by a slim margin. The D’s will pick up seats in the Maine congress. And the cherry on the ice cream is another close win for the incumbent president.

It didn’t have to be this way. A more moderate, even handed approach would have served the Maine GOP in these past few years far better than the LePage approach, when it comes to appealing to the average Mainer. Of course disenfranchising and disrespecting their potential future base this past year was a grave error as well.

  11. After reading these comments,  I have noticed that a lot of conservatives apparently work the night shift.

  12. Vote Colleen Quint and dump the ultra right wing Garrett Mason!
Mason is in the lap of his uncle John Crafts, who is the rear end kisser of Lepage.

  13. Forword!!! simple enough for the FOLLOW-ERS to understand.  too many words confuse them.. Snake oil salesman

  14. Mainers will indicate tomorrow if they’ve learned anything since helping to elect Obama 4 years ago.  After the most damaging and irresponsible presidential term in recent history, I have to wonder why Obama is getting even 35% of the vote?  Unfortunately, the mainstream media has completely abdicated its responsibility for telling us the truth about Obama, and many Americans are just too unwilling to think logically about what kind of government this country truly needs.

      1. Trust that your self proclaimed superiority will damn you to a life of irrelevance and blind indifference. You go boy.

  15. In today’s BDN print edition is a full page add continuing the attack on Nicki Farnham about ethics;  She was investigated and found to have committed no wrong doing by the ethics committee, so why does the opposition party and thier candidate continue to now blatenly lie.  This is dispicable behavior after their accusation has been found to be inaccurate.  Sorry Mr. Gratewick but you have now lost any respect I may have had for you as a candidate, working professional, and citizen of our community.

  16.  If you want to know the only important issue this election, ask yourself if you’d like gridlock or potential bipartisan attempts to get things done.  Obama given another 4 years will mean at least 2 that we’ll hear all about the obstruction of Republicans.  Romney, not as likely, Democrats will need to look bad in order to do that.  Obama basically told Republicans to shut up and that their input didn’t matter.  An analogy would be the child who punches another child in the face and cries that the other one won’t be their friend.

Other than that, the two candidates are one in the same.  Both parties are promoting the same outcome for the average American and it isn’t good.

You may not be able to connect with Romney on his wealth, but I have a hard time feeling a connection with someone who promotes a victim mindset and the idea that the government is going to make everything right.   And I’ve been proud of my country for a long time, and most Americans have been for their entire lives, not only after their spouse is elected president.

Do I agree with Romney on a majority of the “issues”?  Nope, but I also don’t believe that when someone starts a presidency when people are losing their jobs that he should make it more expensive for companies to employ workers.  That misplacing of priorities may be the single reason why I can’t vote for Obama, over all the personality issues, the fact he has proven himself not to have the proper decision making ability as a leader on the issues that actually count.  Who knows, I may just vote 3rd party.

  17. Obama will be impeached for his handling of Benghazi if he is reelected.  His inactions got americans killed and he has staged a major coverup to get him through the election.  This has been the most corrupt administration in the history of this country.
His biggest accomplishments are saving GM so he could waste billions of dollars on a toy called the volt.  He also managed to implement the biggest welfare program in the history of the world known as obamy care.  He has rightfully earned his nickname as the foodstamp president, he is really good at spending working Americans money.  If he is re-elected we can look forward to 4 more years of gridlock, we have to fight his socialism practices every step of the way.

    1. So if Obama should be impeached…  should Bush be tried for war-crimes against humanity?  You are incensed about 4 people but tolerant of over 100 thousand killed.  Granted mistakes may have been made but why don’t you wait for the results of the investigation  (and not Fox news ) before you scream .  Generals on the staff recommended no action, the CIA states there was no coverup.   but if Hannity says it, it has to be true.  Man-up dude.

The gridlock can be attributed to over 300 republican filibusters.

You don’t even know what the word socialism means, it’s a word that Rush says with a sneer so it has to be bad, the president is painted with that word so it must be true.

Romney care is a republican concept created by that right wing bastion of tea partiers and neo-cons the Heritage Foundation. Their concept was to make those who never pay anything towards their own health care, take the responsibility to do so.  And would allow American workers the mobility to move from job to job and not be afraid of losing their healthcare.

But it’s too late for your ilk and your minions to be taught anything new, with a real set of facts.  Your minds are closed, your hearts hate and you despise liberals…  who have splilled as much blood, probably more, than the “right”, for it’s now the poor that fight your wars.

  18. Obama will be impeached for his handling of Benghazi if he is reelected.  His inactions got americans killed and he has staged a major coverup to get him through the election.  This has been the most corrupt administration in the history of this country.
