PORTLAND, Maine — Independent former Maine Gov. Angus King has won the race to succeed retiring Republican U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe after vowing to go to Washington to try to fix the broken political process.

The former two-term governor overcame challenges from Republican Secretary of State Charlie Summers and Democratic state Sen. Cynthia Dill in an election with big implications for control of the Senate. Democrats held a 51-47 edge going into Tuesday’s elections.

King says he was inspired to run because Snowe described the Senate as broken. He cast himself as unbeholden to parties and able to broker compromise. He endured millions of dollars’ worth of attack ads from Republican and conservative groups.

Summers said he’d restore “fiscal sanity” to Washington. Dill cast herself as eager to continue President Barack Obama’s agenda.

      1. No doubt, but I guess I would like my news to actually have some basis in results before they start making such broad conclusions.  Do they not remember history?  Projecting a Dewey win over Truman comes to mind.  The fact that they called the 2000 election for Bush, then Gore, then Bush, then a crocodile…. Seems like a little fact building with actual results would be more responsible journalism.

        1.  ” Responsible journalism” ??
          Wouldn’t  that be an oxymoron?
            Sorta like  ” military intelligence”?

          1. Yeah, I concede that point.  I must have been spaced out for a minute there, transported to a dimension that wasn’t based on reality…. I’m back now, I see the error of my thinking.

          1. so even though there’s only 9 precincts reporting, they have declared a winner.
do you think that your vote matters?

  1. This was a forgone conclusion, all that out of state chamber of commerce money spent for nothing.
    Charlie who?…. crickets..

  2. “…….vowing to go to Washington to try to fix the broken political process.”

Good luck with that Angus.  I won’t be taking any wagers for your success.

    1. I agree.  Seems like they might want to hold off on the conclusive results until at least 8:30…. :-)

  3. The best pick of the crooks, Summers is a sleaze ball, and we need Dill in Augusta for entertainment, life is good.

  4. Really? I find it interesting that the news across the country is reporting that king wins when there are only 4 precincts  reporting…. These elections are rigged by the people at the top

  5. Yes and the media said LePage lost his election, yet when I woke in the morning he was our Governor

  6. Republicans lost Olympia Snowe’s “safe” Senate seat.

    Bye Bye Charlie

Now go find some voter fraud to explain this…

    Yessah

    1. so, 9 precincts reporting, but they have already declared king as the winner?
      really?
      you don’t think there’s fraud?
      you don’t think it’s rigged?
      wake up.
      smell the corruption.

      1. 2% of Precincts reporting and Angus has won — REALLY? No need to count votes, right? First time voter in Maine, and already wondering “why bother?”. P.S. I’m originally from Alabama and a former resident of Florida, so I know a thing or two about corrupt politicians and voter fraud, unfortunately. I was hoping Maine would be better.

        1.  I believe it’s based on statistical probability and will likely turn out to be correct or they wouldn’t be calling it.

      2. yes but it depends on which precincts came in, if they are large ones and using statistics you can accurately predict.

  7. King didn’t so much win as Summers lost. Take this for what it is, a repudiation of tea party extremists. I’m betting that the state houses also loose their republican majorities for the same reason.

Maine has some good solid conservatives. I think Snowe was one of them, but the tea party ran her off and this is her payback. She knew very well what the outcome was going to be when she resigned.

I hope Lepage gets the message, but I doubt it. The republicans went all in with the tea party; the party of angry old white guys and now Maine will have to spend the next decade cleaning up their mess.

  8. There should be a maximum number of wrinkles a person is allowed to have when running for office.  This poor fella looks like he may not be able to keep up unless he has a motorized scooter. Maybe he ran for office just for the healthcare benefits.

  9. I’m glad the Dems finally got their act together and didn’t have another “Libby” Mitchell debacle… however I am a LITTLE sad that Fire Marshall Bill wasn’t elected because he would have made for a great caricature in Doonesbury.
