BANGOR, Maine — Rep. John Martin, D-Eagle Lake, who has served continuously in the Maine Legislature since 1964, trails Republican Allen Michael Nadeau by more than 300 votes with all but three towns reporting in House District 1.
Martin told the BDN by phone early Wednesday morning that he’s not sure he could make up the difference with vote totals from just three towns outstanding.
“If you throw enough mud around, some of it’s going to stick,” Martin said. “I’m really not surprised by all of this. I think money has now infiltrated legislative races to the point where money will be buying legislative seats in Aroostook County.
Ben Grant, chairman of the Maine Democratic Party, said Martin had called party leaders Tuesday night to say he was worried about the outcome of the election.
“This whole night has been full of anomalies, but this is one upset that was bound to happen after decades of Democratic rule in the Eagle Lake region,” David Sorensen, a Maine Republican Party spokesman, said. “ [A Republican] winning in John Martin’s district shows there’s a lot of discontent with Democrats that a lot of people didn’t see.”
Martin served as speaker of the Maine House of Representatives from 1975 to 1994.

And Mr. Martin’s purpose in discussing the obvious with his party’s leadership? Surely they had access to the same numbers he did.
I’ll not make the accusation; I have nothing to support it. Nonetheless, it was an election twenty years ago that members of Mr. Martin’s staff were caught stuffing ballot boxes for a recount.
Not sayin’, just ponderin’ . . .
Typical Republican smear……… Where’s your link to Martin being indicted or charged with a crime. I want to read about his crimes. Oh wait you said you were “just pondering”, isn’t “just pondering” kind of like the republicans technique used against John McCain in South Carolina, called push polling.
Push Polling
“The term is also commonly used in a broader sense to refer to legitimate
polls that aim to test political messages, some of which may be
negative. Future usage of the term will determine whether the strict or
broad definition becomes the most favored definition. However, in all
such polls, the pollster asks leading questions or suggestive questions that “push” the interviewee towards adopting an unfavourable response towards the political candidate.”
“Many push polls are negative attacks on other candidates. These attacks
“often contain information with little or no basis in fact”. They will ask questions such as “If you knew that Candidate John Martin was
being investigated for corruption, would you be more likely to vote for
him, or less likely?” The question doesn’t state that any investigation
has taken place, so it is not a lie, but it serves to imply that
Candidate Martin is corrupt”……………

So I get it now and I am “just pondering” Can one assume that because so many Republicans are idiots they might ALL be idiots. “Just pondering”?
I guess that makes me a “DINO” Dem. in name only since voted fot Nadeau????? Get a life—Term limits were meant to stop career crooks from staying in Augusta for a lifetime!!!!!
I don’t care if you’re a WINO, you obviously can’t read. I asked Scott_Frankfort to post the link to Martins indictment or arrest in the matter he was referring to.
Are you aware that wone of John Martin’s ‘worker bees’ went to jail because of him?……..
deflect, deflect, deflect………….. just answer my question is Martin “wone” of the ones indicted, charged or arrested???????
So sorry about my typing ability… But the answere in NO he was not charged…. Did you ever try to catch an eel……. nuff said…
I’ve assumed nothing.
You’ve assumed that I’m a Republican. I can only speculate that my long memory (A mere twenty years doesn’t seem to me to be all that long an interval, really.) has brought elephants to mind for you. Having never heard of a red elephant, I can only ponder how you came to your assumption.
I’m not at all certain how my comments compare to push polling. The only polls that ultimately matter, the ones that collect our ballots, had been closed for hours at the time I posted. The same can be said of the article under which my comments were posted. Neither could have had any effect on the outcome of the race, nor did they.
Ponder away, friend. I do. In the right company, of like mind or not, it can lead to illuminating debates.
