BELFAST, Maine — Burglars surprised an older woman in her bedroom at about 2 a.m. Thursday, but left when she told them to get out, according to police.

The woman’s Ocean Street home was one of four that were broken into or almost broken into overnight by two burglars, Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham of the Belfast Police Department said.

“They opened the door to her bedroom and shined a flashlight in,” he said Thursday afternoon.

After they left, she was frightened and barricaded herself into her bedroom. She did not have a telephone with her and waited until daylight before venturing out of the room to call police, Cunningham said. She told officers she did not think that anything was taken from her home.

“I don’t believe they thought anybody was in that house,” he said. “I’m of the opinion that they thought they were all empty.”

Investigating officers believe that two burglars were involved in the string of break-ins and attempted break-ins on Mayo and Ocean streets because of the footprints they left behind in the snow.

They also left behind a cigarette butt in the toilet of another home that was entered and robbed. Police took the butt to have it analyzed for DNA evidence.

“At this point, we’re collecting evidence,” Chief Mike McFadden said Thursday morning. He had some tips for residents.

“Lock your doors, and call the police when you have any question if there’s something out of the ordinary,” he said.

      1. I got the following in an email recently with instructions to post it on my door:

        WARNING

Due to the high cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shots.

        Thank you for your understanding.

    1. There are  two people hoping you are right. :-)

      Smoke smoke that cigarette.
But nicotine slaves are all the same,At a pettin’ party or a poker game,Everything’s must stop while they smoke a cigarette.

      1. LOL, I would venture that where there is one butt there is probably some mathing butts between all the burglurized houses. When these guys eventually are arrested and convicted of a felony, not neccessarily this one, they will have their DNA taken and bingo, their charges will excalate to these burglaries.

          1. The jail I worked at didn’t do that, they were only authorized to take a DNA swab from convicted felons. Things may have changed in the last 2 years.

    2. actually there may be more than one person’s dna in there . However, once they rule out all of the contributors whose dna should be there, the last match should belong to the intruder.

    1.  I agree my good sir, if an intruder wants to enter my home, they’ll be met with my second amendment right. And it happens to be a 12 gauge with buck shot.

      1. Just be sure it isn’t your son, neighbor, wife, daughter, whomever, coming home late, perhaps drunk, before killing someone.  This very thing just happened you know.  No, I’m not anti-gun.  I’m anti shoot first ask questions later.  It is irresponsible to suggest any other course of action and not in line with responsible firearm ownership.

      1. If someone does not have a phone in their bedroom what is the likelihood they lurk here on Disqus?

My message was for everyone who read the article:

HAVE A PHONE in the room you sleep, in case of break-in, fire, need for ambulance, etc.

Be sure it works/is charged regularly.

That is about not BECOMING a victim!

        Be SMART, not sorry.

  1. Granny didn’t need a phone in the bedroom.
A 12 ga would have solved several problems, better and quicker!

  2. Tip:  If your car has keys w/alarm buttons, keep them beside your bed.  If you cannot call 911, at least you can get the car horn blaring to alert your neighbors.
