BANGOR, Maine — A motorist speeding through an intersection — and a red light — apparently caused a two-car crash that rendered both cars undrivable and sent the other motorist to the hospital with a broken arm, police said.
Bangor police and fire personnel responded to 911 calls around 1:50 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Union Street and Godfrey Boulevard.
“Witnesses said a vehicle driving inbound on Union Street was speeding and that it ran a red light, hitting another vehicle turning onto Godfrey from Union,” said Bangor police Sgt. Robert Bishop.
The vehicles involved in the crash were a 2000 GMC pickup truck and 1997 Chevrolet Geo, both of which had to be towed from the crash scene. Traffic had to be restricted to one lane while emergency personnel cleaned up the accident scene.
The pickup was driven by Roger Gillis of Bangor, who was turning onto Godfrey when his truck was hit — in T-bone fashion, head-on between the passenger side door and truck bed — by the Geo driven by Zakery Garfield, 30, of Vassalboro, Bishop said.
Gillis was taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center with what Bishop said was an apparent broken arm.
Bishop said no charges have been filed, but they are pending as officer Jim Dearing finishes his accident report.

I can’t imagine, someone speeding through a red light in Bangor. Oh my!
And we don’t need traffic cams…..
Red light cameras are banned by state law.
I know that
And that’s a good thing.
GOOD!!!
Yeah it’s good to have something banned that can be used to save lives
The cameras won’t save any lives, they’d just make it easier to prosecute the guilty party. Banning cars that can go over 5 miles an hour and aren’t made of Nerf will save lives.
To bad they can’t be used to just catch those running red lights… it makes more since to catch someone going 15 over then 5
THANKS GOV ONE MORE GOOD DEED FOR MAINE PLEASE MAINE 4 MORE YEARS
Studies have shown they do not reduce accidents.
They may not reduce accidents, but, would catch the plate numbers of those taking that EXTRA chance…
Germany has traffic cameras everyone and they will send offenders a speeding ticket in the mail. Pretty effective unless it’s a US military HUMMVEE (catches part of the bumper number) The problem I have with it is that it works in very socialist countries who have zero respect for personal privacy rights or freedom of speech. Sure, some US police departments are getting drones for intelligence gathering – doesn’t make it right though – not the America I grew up in and not within the parameters of our Constitution in my opinion.
Unfortunately, todays America is not the one I grew up in either. But, it seems the younger (and older) generations are in too much of a hurry, with very little respect to others…
Just great let them run the red lights in Maine One more of the great Gov ideas save money any place you can
WHY NOT
Just saw someone run a red light today… always double check before going into an intersection and when in doubt check again
i know one light that people constantly run is the one on hammond st by “ghettobetters” sorry leadbetters lol near the hammond st church. i always wait and do a double look before i pull out when the light turns cause everytime theres some one that runs it
Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians need to wait and look both ways at every intersection in this city – red light running is epidemic. Cameras work but if the state has already banned them then the onus is on local police to make traffic enforcement a priority. Car culture, IT’S FANTASTIC
It is fantastic since it delivered everything I ate for breakfast this morning!
I think by now everyone knows this, and yet so many people continue to simply “assume” they will be just fine without looking before proceeding through a green light. I just don’t get it.
That’sbecause nobody dares to stop there for any length of time! Kind of funny, but kinda true, too!
You are right about that one, Sally. I go through that intersection every day, and when the light turns green, I do not assume the coast is clear. I assume there will be another car or two yet to come through. I actually wonder if the two lights are synchronized correctly.
Everyone is missing the big picture. A 1997 Chevrolet Geo was still on the road.
Edit: Just watched the news and it was a 4 door Geo. Not one of the little ones and the damage was not that horrible.
so what there’s a lot of old cars on the road
Edit: Was a 4 door Geo and not one of the little ones.
Yeah – I think those are Toyota Corollas underneath. Fine automobiles.
The only difference was that the Prizm had Delco radio and different seat fabric.
Maybe it wasn’t a car or truck at all… could have been a “Flying Saucer”…
not chevys. Toyotas and other foreign cars maybe, Union made cars aren’t built to last, they need the repeat sales to survive. GM is entering a slow death, They borrowed money from a government agency to pay back the bailout, to make it look good.. The Chevy Volt get 17 miles per gallon and it’s their electric car.LOL!!! VW has had desiel rabbits getting 50 miles per gallon for 40 years. Can’t buy them in Maine because the state wants the fuel tax revenue..
I believe that car was a Toyota Corolla twin-not a real Chevy.
I’ve seen a bunch of old chevys on the road
Wasn’t that car a Toyota Corolla twin made out in the Fremont California plant by union employees? The plant is now closed and the production was moved to Mississippi last year.
running red lights and going too fast on the city streets is something that is done everyday in the Bangor area.i think the police need to enforce this more and mabye put a longer delay on the trafic lights would help.. AND also people speed through school zones when lights are flashing, that’s is unexceptable
The only thing that surprises me is as many red light running speeders with a combination of lack of enforcement that these crashes don’t happen as often. Pretty soon you will need to equip your car with more safety gear then a professional race car driver just to drive through Bangor.
I’m a crossing guard at Garland and Forest Ave.,there is a 4 way stop sign there I see folks run right thru without a look daily,I have yet to see an accident i hope i don’t for the little kids sake especially
Even when a light turns green I look at the traffic. I would never turn left in front of a speeding car even if my light was green. At least the big GMC can withstand it.
I’d wager a bet that some of the same ‘model citizens’ that run red lights every day are the first to condemn drug users, pharmacy thieves and a host of other undesirable fellow citizens. Some of these extremely poor drivers pose just as big a threat if not more than do these street druggies.
Pharmacy thieves, drug users ought to be condemed. There are freaks from all walks of life.. are you not judging right now.. We are never going to live in a perfect world, everyone wears a different pair of shoes. But don’t worry soon we will all meet in the bread lines.
Yes I am judging. It’s amazing that we don’t have 10 times more of these kinds of red light accidents. What makes you believe that we’re all going to be in a bread line?
Someone just trying to get in line for their Obama Bucks and Obama phone. Now they are getting to use ObamaCare. Give them a break.
Yes, that’s right, around here people can make even traffic accidents somehow about politics.
Great googly moogly.
what a d!ck
glad Mr. Gillis will be ok
