ELLSWORTH – Dayton Doggett Arey passed away unexpectedly Friday, Nov. 9, 2012. He was born Oct. 6, 1955, in Newton, Mass.
He grew up in Newbury, Mass., where he played hockey in his backyard as a youngster on “Arey’s Pond” and spent a lot of his time rebuilding the courts at the Old Town Country Club with his father. It is here that his love of tennis began and Dayton became a star tennis player receiving many awards. Dayton attended St. John Prep School and Triton Regional High School, where he was an exceptional athlete playing soccer, hockey and tennis. He was captain of all three teams and received numerous awards and accolades. Dayton attended New England College and continued his success. Dayton had a magnetic personality and easy going demeanor, which gravitated people toward him and amassed him with many friends throughout his life. He had a true passion for sailing, which is a family love, and enjoyed every opportunity he could be on the water. His love of boating brought him to Cape Cod, Mass., in the summers and to the Bahamas when his daughter, Jenny, was small. Dayton was a skilled worker and could accomplish any task and was always helping others. He worked for many years in the boating industry for this is where his heart and expertise was. Dayton remained an athlete and played tennis regularly. He was an excellent player achieving much success and creating a group of friends who truly loved him. Dayton was always positive and had a smile for everyone. He devoted his time to taking care of his family and just wanted everyone to be happy. He will truly be missed and his beautiful spirit can never be replaced.
Dayton is survived by his parents, Florian George Arey Jr. and Deborah Doggett Arey of Milbridge; and his brother, George Arey III and his wife, Anne Arey, and their three children, Christopher, Quincy and Dayton Arey, of Milbridge. Other survivors are his sister, Debbie Arey Canning and husband, Peter Canning, and their children, Shalagh Canning and Peter Canning, of Plainville, Mass.; his wife, Heidi Arey; stepchildren, Brigitte, Cassidy and Eli Parady; and his beloved daughters, Jennifer and Elizabeth Arey.
The celebration of Dayton’s life will be held 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at The Good News Center, 171 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, in the community center auditorium, with John Linnehan officiating. A memorial fund has been set up at First National Bank for Jennifer Arey, care of Dayton Arey, P.O. Box 1099, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
