BELFAST, Maine — Police have accused a registered nurse of stealing drugs from a man who left his prescription pills at the Belfast Hannaford checkout earlier this month.
Dianne L. Hoffman, 41, of Whitefield was identified after security camera footage of the Nov. 10 theft was broadcast on Facebook by the Belfast Police Department.
She was issued a summons Monday on a charge of stealing drugs, according to a police report.
Apparently a man had picked up his prescription from the pharmacy counter but had gone to the regular checkout counter to pay for them, according to Officer Wendell Ward of the Belfast Police Department. While there, he set the bag down at the register and forgot to take it with him after paying for his purchases. When the man came back to the store to get them, they had disappeared, Ward said.
Video from store security cameras show Hoffman went through the line a few minutes after the man had left his prescription purchase behind, according to the officer.
The nurse, who works in Waldo County, looked at the bag containing the Schedule Y drug and read the information on it, he said. Then she took the bag with her.
Hoffman has been cooperative since she was tracked down via the Facebook tip, police said.

I had to google schedule Y and see it includes some drugs that are probably easy to sell on the street.

One would think she would know better being a nurse. Seems lots of people up there will do anything for prescription drugs. I keep telling my doctor I want the bare minimum. And, I put my meds in a locked safe!
It happens more often than you think…and most of the time, they get away with it because it is difficult to prove unless caught red handed.
Medical professionals have a very high rate of alcoholism and addiction.
There is never a ‘first time’ for this type of behavior…
Maybe she knew who he is after reading his name on the pharmacy tag and was going to bring them to him….or maybe did take them for other purposes….maybe is some sort of misunderstanding…this might not be the whole story, just saying you are innocent until proven guilty
So naive… I highly doubt that was her intentions.
Even if she DID intend to return them to him,her training deligates that she should have alerted the Pharmacist of the situation.Stupid woman,and now? Probably an unemployed stupid woman.Oh wait,its WCGH? Maybe not…

A Nurse ??
Nurses, Drs, cops and all others in our society who are granted a position of some power are still human. And as such they can suffer from all of the ills of humanity: greed, intolerance, addictions, sociopathy…the list goes on and on.
While I will agree with the innocent until proven guilty philosophy, I also know first hand that trust is not always appropriate simply because of a title.
