PHIPPSBURG— He’s heard about it happening, but Phippsburg Fire Chief James Totman said this was the first time he’s ever seen someone stuck in a chimney.
Totman said the fire department got the call around 5:15 a.m. Saturday for a 19-year-old male stuck in a chimney at the 55 Heron Cove Road home. Totman estimated the man was lodged about 4 feet down from the top of the chimney. The furnace, which vents into the chimney, was shut off, Totman said.
Firefighters had roof ladders extended on both sides of the chimney, but the roof was so steep the Bath Fire Department responded with a ladder truck. Firefighters used it to swing over the chimney, take bricks down and get to the 19-year-old.
The fire chief estimated there wasn’t more than a foot one way and about 10 inches the other of clearance in the chimney. It took crews about 45 minutes to free the man, who may have been cleaning the chimney.
“How he got there I couldn’t tell you,” Totman said. “He was in the chimney and we had to take the chimney down. I’ve never seen it before in my life.”
Totman said the man was fine after being freed from the chimney. Phippsburg EMS was on scene and checked him over.
Police then took custody of him. Cody Ayer, 19, was arrested at the scene on a parole violation by Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Deputy Adam Temple and transported to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.

I suppose that’s one way to clean the chimney.
“Cleaning the chimney” ???/
More like cleaning out the silverware drawer and etc.

Leave him there to think things over and regroup.

A pretty good lyric. Especially the boo doo bee doo.
Better that than “Come on baby light my fire!” lol
Lol, or Great Balls O’Fire. Goodness gracious!
If I could ask this kid one question: Did you ever consider breaking in like a normal burglar? Did this structure not have doors and windows?
It’s not even Thanksgiving yet. Christmas is coming way too early this year…even for burglars.
Who in their right mind would climb into a chimney anyway?! Unbelievable! Was this even his home?
He was not in his right mind. He was in his parents home, where he lives. He stole nothing and was not a burglar. He has a mental health issue and recently completed rehab.
Totman says “how he got there, I couldn’t tell you”. Didn’t you ask him? His condition was fine. Was it his house?
Chestnuts roasting on an open fireplace……..
Doggone it….after I thought about it, I should have said if his name had been Chet we could have been singing that old favorite..”Chetsnuts roasting on an open fire”
He was in his parents home, where he lives. He stole nothing and was not a burglar. He has a mental health issue and recently completed rehab. Show some compassion, the article says nothing about being a burglar, etc.
I think folks would have shown some compassion if the BDNews had known that and reported that but, sadly, they didn’t. We only know what we read.
Agreed. However, folks should show a bit of self restraint and realize that the media does not always provide all the details and thus withhold from making comments that are hurtful.
