SACO, Maine — Police are investigating a hit-and-run incident and generator theft that occurred within minutes of each other early Sunday.

Deputy Chief Jeffrey Holland said Monday an officer attempted to pull over a red pickup truck on Ocean Park Road around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, about 10 minutes after someone reported a generator had been stolen on Norman Street.

The truck tried to pass a Ford Explorer shortly after police spotted the vehicle, Holland said. In the process, the truck clipped the Explorer’s rear fender but continued on.

Police continued to pursue the truck but lost it in near Main Street, according to Holland. The vehicle, which was registered to a man from Caribou, was eventually located, but no driver was found, despite the use of a Maine State Police canine unit .

The hit-and-run and reported generator theft could be connected, Holland said.

“We have some leads to follow up on,” he said.
