BANGOR, Maine — A local woman driving on Thirteenth Street Tuesday morning after taking her daily methadone treatment hit a utility pole and knocked down wires onto her car, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said.
Shirley M. Arrick, 35, of Bangor was driving her boyfriend’s burgundy 2008 Suzuki car at about 9:10 a.m. and hit the pole so hard it “was snapped in two with live wires on the ground,” the sergeant said.
Officer Taylor Bagley put Arrick through a field sobriety test as power company crews repaired the snapped pole and police later placed her in handcuffs.
Arrick was transported to the Bangor police station and examined by one of the police department’s drug recognition experts, Edwards said. She was issued a summons charging her with operating under the influence of drugs and operating a motor vehicle after suspension, and then released.
“Based on statements by Ms. Arrick and Officer Bagley’s observations it was determined that Ms. Arrick received methadone from an area clinic this morning,” Edwards said.
Arrick also was treated by Bangor Fire Department paramedics for minor burns to her face due to the deployment of the air bag, Edwards said.
Jeff Strout, who lives in the neighborhood, was walking behind Mansfield Stadium when the collision occurred.
“I heard a ‘boom, boom’ and then a second ‘boom, boom,’ probably from the pole breaking,” he said. “She’s lucky to be alive — the wires were right on her car.”
Strout said he helped direct traffic while waiting for police to arrive.
The woman “was hysterical” after the crash and the deployment of her small vehicle’s air bag, Strout said.
Barricades were put up to block traffic on Thirteenth Street between Union and Rutland streets, which was closed for about an hour.
Three Bangor Hydro Electric Co. repair trucks arrived at the scene and within an hour had the broken pole removed. The crash cut power to residents on Thirteenth Street, one crew member said.
Liquid breakfast maybe?? Thankfully without injury to another and hopefully no physical injury to the driver…..Crazy…..

Actually it hasn’t. No one in the addiction treatment community would ever use “meth” to mean methadone.
It means methamphetamine, as in crystal meth.
One is an illegally produced substance, the other is an FDA approved pharmaceutical.
I understand the difference. But language is made from common usage. For example when a non- “addiction treatment community” coworker of mine mentions a meth clinic I know exactly what he is talking about. so does everyone else and so do you.

in south portland they seem to be worse drivers when they race to get to the clinic. just a couple weeks ago, i watched someone switching lanes to pass any cars in the way, then just at the clinic they turned right from the left lane and cut off a crane they had just passed. I see something crazy atleast once a week, and they are almost always on the way to the clinic
I’ve heard similar horror stories happening at the former Turning Tide clinic in Rockland. It’s a miracle nobody got hurt or killed by these addicts who rush to get to the clinic then drive straight across the street without stopping or looking, to buy coffee at Maritime Farms after getting their dose. I used to hear these stories almost daily.

At a bar you are not under a physician’s care. If you go to a Doctor and get a migraine shot you have to have someone there to drive you home, why don’t they require the same with methadone?

no they don’t the last time i got a shot of morphine for my migraine they wait 30 min then let me leave knowing the fact i was driving so they don’t always stick to that rule especially when they are over crowed. I am not saying driving under the influence of any chemical is okay but it takes 30-60minutes for it to work like any other med i would say and sometimes longer so i don’t no maybe they should be given one hour to get to there destination i’m not sure how it works but they have done some studies regarding methadone and they do say it does not impair your motorskills.
Most people don’t leave bars and drive drunk. Some do on occasion and should be punished to the full extent of the law. Methadone dependents and their providers need to be held to at least those standards.
How are the going to prevent it? Are the supposed to follow each person out the door and see if they get behind the wheel?
If a bartender lets someone drive drunk and they are killed or kill someone without trying to take the appropriate measures and not over-serve, then they can be held liable for it. So why not expect the same from a Health Clinic? Methadone Bar and Gill anyone?
Bar and Gill? LOL!! Whether a bartender or server is liable has been asked many times in a court of law. Sometimes they are, sometimes they are not.
I don’t know if these people sign paperwork stating they will not drive after taking their medication. If they do then that would absolve those that do give them their medication.
The bottom line though is this woman knew she should not be driving but she didn’t care and choose to but I’m torn on whether they should cut off her methadone.

How about the governmant stops being their drug dealer. How long will they keep administering methadone, suboxen and whatever else they give to replace the “illegal drugs” they are trying to get these people off? What makes methadone any better than oxycodone or heroin? From all the stories in the news about the abuse of these substitute drugs and incidents like this, why is there not a time limit for their treatment and taper the dosages to a point where these folks are completely drug free?

well if you thought about it for a minute then you would no any medicine you take takes at least 30-60 minutes to start working its not a miracle drug it don’t work as fast as you take it it takes time like any other medicine so that’s why they can take it and drive i wasn’t trying to be disrespectful i just wanted to clarify that.

Lynx transportation delivers many many people to the clinics…but so many more take their own vehicles and get reimburst by lynx for the trips… oh and they do it seven days a week. you would not even beleive how they mess with the system… the methadone clinics are a clearing house for the ones who abuse the system terribly.
I watch the same people head out via the lynx day after day year after year….Most of them weren’t even addicts…but they sure are now…

there isn’t free gov transportation but they do get PAID for mileage and travel…so they hook up and drive three and four to a car and EACH collect the mileage. nice, huh?
It is only a miracle more aren’t dead and haven’t killed innocent others. The fact that so many of these junkies do not have a license helps reduce these numbers as well. Before long, we will have to provide them with cars too then it will get really ugly (er).

The State would, in fact, pay for her transportation service if she had asked DHHC to do so. Many do get reimbursed for taxis.

They get vouchers. They don’t have to shell out money.

It is very lucky that some other driver , innocently driving in that area, did not have that telephone pole come crashing down on their vehicle. It is very fortunate no one was seriously hurt or worse. It is horrible to think of many folks on drugs and medications driving . So unsafe and unfair.

We pay them mileage … pay for the drugs … and then wonder if they are “operating under the influence”? .. Government sanctioned addiction ..

You also make the choice to get methadone treatment for your addiction, which like it or not, is the best available option for people with opiate dependency. Is it really the people trying to get help that we should be attacking?
In some ways, yes….if we don’t treat these folks quite so hospitably, perhaps others might think twice before making their incredibly stupid decisions to touch the drugs in the first place!

You may find this hard to believe, because you obviously are severely misinformed on this subject, but a large percentage of those who are addicted to opiates got started when they took a legal prescription written by their doctor. I underwent two minor surgeries over the course of a month or so and was prescribed narcotics in both cases, after this it was all over. My addiction spun out of control and snowballed over the next 4 years until I sought help from a methadone clinic, which was the best decision I ever made. It was only after I stopped getting legal prescriptions that I started buying them off the street.
I have had three major surgeries- all of which have incredibly painful recoveries. I was prescribed narcotics, but chose to not take them. I asked for other pain relievers so I would not have to take narcotics.
It is a choice to take narcotics. A large percentage of people who are addicted CHOOSE to take them and many of them take them illegally.
People can also choose to go through withdrawal and wean off medication completely. Taking methadone is simply another way to drug the body into thinking it is taking narcotics and should not be the long term solution many addicts are making it.

While I do agree they should not be behind the wheel of a vehicle, I know it is not a choice. The decision to take that first drug, or drink, was a choice. Becoming an addict is not a choice, it is a process that most people will not be aware is even taking place.
Many of those taking Methadone will go somewhere and eat, maybe have a cup of coffee and then drive when they feel capable. I don’t know much about dosing for methadone, but if a driver is obviously impaired, it would seem they need their dose reduced. That would be the responsibility of the clinic. Clients should be required to stay at the clinic for a period of time until their ability to drive has been determined.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but i know when i was on methadone i could not get high on it all it did was make me not sick. but if i chose to get high there were other drugs that we could get . please don’t blame the clinic blame the person.
Finally someone who gets it. The clinics do the best they can but you can only do so much and at some point it becomes a matter of personal responsibility. I have taken methadone (legally) for over three years and not once have I felt drowsy or sedated. Some people who are taking methadone also take other illicit drugs in combination with the methadone, which is what makes you very sedated and sleepy. When taken at a proper dose, methadone does not make you excessively tired or sedated, it only does so when given at too high of a dose or when taken with other drugs such as benzodiazapenes i.e.-valium, ativan, zanax, etc.
It would be wonderful if people became educated about the facts concerning methadone, instead of spewing out misinformation that they have heard third hand from someone who is completely uninformed. Knowledge is power, misinformation is the root of most problems in our society.

The methadone is supposed to be a therapeutic dose. If the methadone makes the client too drowsy (too high a dose does that just like the heroin), the client can lower the dose. A therapeutic dose shouldn’t affect the persons driving or functioning in their life. Yes I work at a methadone clinic. Not a clinician just some administrative. Don’t approve of the use of methadone but can understand the need of it while working out why the person took the drugs in the first place.

Actually alcohol costs the government (i.e. the taxpayer) much more than any other drug. According to the CDC it cost John Q. Taxpayer $223.5 billion in 2006. These costs are associated with productivity losses, medical care, police enforcement, vehicle crashes, etc. While in states that have methadone, for every dollars John Q. Taxpeyer spends on methadone, $4-$7 are saved in productivity losses, medical care, police enforcement, etc. So like them or not, they save money. In a perfect world there would be a one dose pill addicts could take and be cured of the disease of addiction (yes it is a disease, just like choosing to eat bad foods causes diseases of the heart, diabetes, and so on), but we don’t live in a perfect world. This is what we have at the moment.

Methadone isn’t a treatment, it is a replacement. It’s main function is to keep crime down so people like you aren’t getting robbed by addicts so they can score a fix. In that regard it is doing it’s job. Many people see addiction as a moral failing rather than the disease it is, so they do anything to disparage any attempts to help an addict. Methadone helps the entire community, but it is not a pathway to recovery, and of course recovery is something everyone would prefer. However, recovery is up to the addict and no one else.

I think the current drunk driver laws are evidence of society’s outrage over drinking and driving…we must now continue to speak up so drug addicts cannot use and drive. currently, people on MMT are absolutely allowed to dose and drive. if you try and alter their behavior in any way they scream discrimination! If methadone is prescribed for pain, it’s picked up at a pharmacy, and taken at home just like any other medication.
Methadone clinics are for observed therapy for the treatment of opioid dependence. (Some of these patients can earn take-home meds, but those are dispensed at the OTP clinic, not from a retail pharmacy.)

People get themselves in trouble by not sticking to the plan and using other substances during their treatment. That is where the problem lies for most who aren’t progressing.
It actually brings druggies to Bangor for a free fix. The minute they opened the first clinic, the migration started to our fair city……
It may help them to “begin to straighten out their lives” When does the end result of the treatment begin to show?
they are handed these drugs, sent off to drive home…we pay them to drive there, give them free drugs, some for years, and then pay them mileage to drive home. What a system!

There should be a police officer stationed near a methadone clinic 24/7, so they can catch people driving under the influence as much as they can. That way, maybe people will think twice about doing it.

First of all its methadone not meth. Crystal meth and methadone are total opposites. Second not every person on methadone is like this woman I was on it for 8 yrs never crashed a car. Never dozed off in a car or anywhere this woman was clearly on other drugs. Which the clinic should have noticed while she was there . Third there are people prescribed methadone or Percocet from private doctors are they supposed to not drive either . Y’all complain methadone clients don’t work and live off the state well how u expect them to work if they can’t drive? I agree the majority are abusing the opportunity to get clean but to those who aren’t do not deserve to lose a driver’s license. Educate yourself.
I am curious enough to ask, Why were you taking methadone for 8 years? Is that a normal timeframe for treatment? I trust that you are now clean, and if I am assuming correctly congratulations.

We don’t get paid by the state to drive to and from a clinic in order to get our daily drug dose.

Sorry, but I made the choice early on to NOT do drugs and to NOT drink alcohol. I work very hard, yet still struggle to make ends meet. The state does not help me at all, yet I am supposed to feel “bad” for those who made the choice to take drugs and/or drink and think that they CANNOT work? Why can’t they work stocking shelves at a grocery store or any job that doesn’t require a lot of personal interaction?

Blaming liberals for this woman’s accident because they’re the ones responsible for the methadone clinics is as idiotic as blaming conservatives for the hunting accident because they’re the ones responsible for putting guns in the hands of the hunters.
She does not appear to be pleased with herself in the photo, and without help she will probably beat herself up pretty good over this whole affair. I am glad it was only a telephone pole that she hit. It can and will be replaced. Society tries to help those with addictions, which is a really good thing that they attempt and do for those who desire to escape addiction. I do not believe any child starts out saying that one day they want to be addicted to drugs so I can get free stuff. It would appear the program needs a revamp to assure that the patient is not driving after treatment.

I saw a guy get his methadone at the clinic at acadia and then get into the drivers seat of a big sears delivery truck in the parking lot and go to work. and no i wasnt there to get a dose.

So, why aren’t police waiting to arrest people on methadone near the clinics for driving. The majority of these folks have transportation available through Lynxx, etc. because they are on social services. It should be considered serious – like leaving the bar under the influence. And, our tax dollars pay for this. Oh, and don’t forget, she will get a court appointed attorney, and her medical may be covered by MaineCare or Medicare, and the DA will need to prosecute, etc. All taxpayer burdens. The Methadone clinics need to be PHASED OUT!
It is obvious that you know nothing about methadone other then what you hear in the papers..because if u were educated on it you would know that she had to of been taking other drugs with it..no all people on it are like this!! I work 40 hr a week pay 12000 $ a year for health insurance. Pay my taxes every year and take care of my family…I have never crashed a car on it and all the people I work with didn’t even know I was on it!!! So it is sad that people like this lady ruin it for the ones that do it right!!

The new Democratic congress in Maine will announce LD1 to give the rights to one of it’s upstanding young voters.The rights to sue Bangor hydro for endangering a voter by positioning a utility pole in a dangerous place.The state will also pickup the tab for a new vehicle,cell phone for texting and an increase in methadone dosage and EBT.This should help the victim with the hardship of Bangor hydro’s negligence.

Its funny that none of you know nothing about methadone because you you can guarantee that this women was on other drugs along with the methadone..because when taking it right people can live a normal life like the rest of us!!! Before you start bashing it maybe you should get a little education on it and not go on what you hear in the papers!!
exactly right i wish people would get educated on it so they could stop putting people down they think all people going to the methadone clinics are bad people some are but most are real people with a problem society don’t hate or think alcoholics are bad people so whats different

Methadone clinics and drug dealers are quite similar. Both will give you what you need to get your fix and both don’t care if you drive off after having taken your dose. The difference is that the taxpayers are FORCED to pay for the methadone clinics. It’s time to shut these places down.
