Lindsey Graham and John McCain finally came face-to-face with their prey this week.

The two angry Republican senators have been plotting for weeks to stop Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, from rising any further in the Washington firmament. On Nov. 27, their task got more complicated.

Graham, of South Carolina, and McCain, of Arizona — joined occasionally by Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, if only to make it not seem like two men beating up on a woman — are all aboil about the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans. Well, not exactly: They are upset about what Rice said about the attack on several Sunday-morning talk shows five days later.

Why are they upset at Rice and not, say, officials in charge of security at the mission? Or, if they want to go big, why not Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?

Probably because they wanted to go after a lesser official whom President Barack Obama would like to be secretary of state. Or because they don’t want to talk about how Republicans have consistently denied funds to protect diplomatic posts in dangerous places. Or because they don’t want to discuss how supportive they were last decade when then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of State Colin Powell testified that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

Powell and Rice then, like Susan Rice now, were relying on information provided by the intelligence community. There is, however, a major difference: Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice were testifying before official government bodies to justify going to war. Susan Rice was filling airtime between ads for erectile-dysfunction drugs.

Of course, all of this is just more evidence of Washington being full of itself. Only in Washington do people take seriously something said to a tiny audience of insiders half-watching their televisions on a Sunday morning. So seriously that a few senators want to embark on a special investigation beyond those already under way (hearings by congressional committees and a State Department inquiry, headed by former Ambassador Thomas Pickering and ordered by Clinton).

It doesn’t make sense unless you’re just looking for conflict or are up for re-election. As it happens, McCain, the grumpy old man of the Senate, is often spoiling for a fight, and the ally of the man who defeated him four years ago is a satisfying target. And Graham, who must face voters in the red state of South Carolina in two years, already features his dispute with Rice in campaign ads.

The renewed outrage this week was a bit of a surprise, as McCain and Graham had softened their stances in recent days. Few Republican colleagues were flocking to their side, and any hope of Democratic support faded after the president’s passionate defense of Rice at his post-election news conference.

Offering an olive branch, McCain said during the Thanksgiving holiday that he would like to hear from Rice. Rice said she would like to be heard. A meeting was scheduled. What might have been the end of this fake melodrama about what Rice said (although not the end of real concern on what to do about preventing future Benghazis) was not to be.

Rice did admit that she was wrong about what happened in Benghazi — but that got lost when the story got a new twist. Acting Central Intelligence Agency Director Michael Morell, who accompanied Rice, said it wasn’t the director of national intelligence or the CIA that provided edited intelligence to Rice. It was the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After the meeting, the CIA changed its story and said that it did, in fact, change some details.

The confusion doesn’t end there. Shawn Turner, a spokesman for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, told foreign-policy blogger Josh Rogin that earlier news reports saying James Clapper, the agency’s director, made the edits were “frustratingly wrong.” Turner said the talking points “were debated and edited by a collective of experts” from the intelligence community.

If you believe Rice was relying on intelligence given to her, whether it was collected jointly or separately — or even if it helped paint a picture of what happened that the White House liked — doesn’t really matter. On Benghazi, Rice will always be the messenger, not an actor. It will be left to Pickering to sort out who did what to her talking points.

One senator, independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut — usually one of three amigos with McCain and Graham — came out of his meeting with Rice breaking with his friends. Rice was telling “the whole truth,” he said.

That may not matter, either, given how invested Graham and McCain are in making this tragedy all about Rice. Morell’s addition of the FBI to the mix gives them a fresh detail to keep this story going. Then Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and the president himself all but assured a few more news cycles of coverage: Collins, a moderate, said she couldn’t support Rice without more information, while the president reiterated his support of his ambassador.

Then again, this story is getting pretty convoluted. It’s hard enough to know what really happened in Benghazi in September. It’s harder still to implicate Rice in some kind of cover-up. This week’s events will undoubtedly provide more fodder for another round of Sunday-morning talk shows. But the story McCain and Graham are trying to sell is getting harder and harder to swallow.

  1. The Republicans keep showing what hypocrites they are.
Good description here of McCain…”grumpy old man”; however, that might be a bit too mild.
As for Graham…..this is very much a political ploy for him as he is in some jeopardy for re-election in South Carolina. He is now trying to come off more “right wing” (or some would say, trying to appeal more to the tea party element of the party.)

    1. Ya, keep vomiting up the nonsense you listen to on the Pills Limbaugh show and the FAKE NOISE network.. It is ALL you have. Obama has more integrity in his left pinky than all the disgusting CORRUPT right wing hypocrites in the entire country have in their entire bodies all put together. The Bush and the GOP LIED about Iraq resulting in THOUSANDS of American deaths and many more mamed. The Bush and the GOP FAILED to heed warnings of the 9/11 attacks after demoting Richard Clarke, the best anti terror guy we had. Reagan FAILED to heed warnings before the marine barracks in Lebanon got BLOWN UP killing hundreds of marines. And you and your disgusting little pathetic TeaGoofy party has not a word to say about any of all that, do you ? No, of course not. Just keep repeating the vomit you hear out of Pills Limbaugh, your big drug addict college dropout hero. No wonger you people just got POUNDED at the polls, and your electoral NIGHTMARE is only just beginning.

  2. As the Republicans will prove their cooking of Rice will only end when Kerry is select for Hillary’s position. In a twisted sort of way it would be a funny if Obama picked one of the wing nuts to fill the spot. Then you would see then drop the story completely. Pathetically transparent the Republicans reveal their collective brain that amounts to little more then mental mush.

  3. As Sec of State, she’ll have a lot to do with the approval of the Keystone pipeline. As she owns 600K worth of TransCanada stock, I can’t imagine how she would be impartial.

  4. Hold it now. This author is doing a great job reporting on President Obama’s points of view. So getting to the real truth doesn’t matter anymore. The Republicans are considered as “haters of women”which is convenient for the author of the above to imply,This is doing everyone an injustice to save Obama. Too many conflicting answers to these Senator’s questions. Look’s like common sense is being thrown under the bus for Obama’s sake. What about the four Americans who died for our cause-that’s right Obama and his “drive-by-media” don’t care. We’ve come a long ways since Nixon’s departure, but this is potentially much bigger than what Nixon and his staff did-jail sentences for stealing files out of Ginsburg’s office. Lets do an Olympic judge vote of three points for Nixon, how many for Obama? And with no further talk or legal ramifications against Obama. This is turning out to sound like “Alice in Wonderland”!

        1. Interesting comments-I started to see where he is coming from but my view of him is still waiting to be formed-even if he lives in Maine Are we any closer to putting the puzzle together,no,but honest answers need to be found. Even I understood what was happening in Benghazi within two hours of the “film protest” beginning and almost three months after a 20-40 foot hole was made in the outer wall of the Embassy. Too bad the administration didn’t follow Britain’s action of leaving earlier.

      1. You got nothing. “Must see…?” This is Faux News’ Hannity at his “gotcha” sensationalizing best… I wonder if in 1996-1998 the GOP-led House was limiting the budget for the State Dept to the same degree as now, making expenditure decisions by State as difficult as now. The author is right… this witchhunt gets more and more convoluted, and Collin’s “concerns” are so much empty wind that do nothing but support the party line. Politics at play… Kerry as Sec of State opens the door for Scott Brown to return to the Senate through a special election. Brown’s faithful regurgitation of the ultra-conservatvie, pro-business party line (Scalia his “favorite” Supreme Court Justice zinger…) would assure him of financial backing of a run… “All politics, all the time…” the motto of the GOP. That’s all this is… Dancing on the graves of a dead Ambassador and his people.

    1. See my posts above, and please, keep just vomiting out the crud you drink up on the OxyDruggy Limbaugh vomit show. No wonder your sad little TeaFool party just pounded out of sight at the polls. The GOP: no end to their LIES and HYPOCRISY. And Benghazi? It was a tragedy, and if there was an error in the risk assessment it is being corrected and the perpetrators are being hunted down and will be brought to justice. Only in GOP LIAR and DELUSIONLAND would someone be trying to make hay out of this. But I suppose I can understand it given how badly the pathetic GOP TeaFools just got pounded at the polls.

      1. Not trying to make hay, too much emotional BS to see the real situation. Hopefully, it will be corrected-see the video I put on line.

  5. McSAME is indeed the Grumpy Old Grampy of the Senate, and hypocrisy is nothing new to him. He took bribes in the 80’s from that savings and loan guy, and he left his injured wife for Cindy who was much younger, and much of that had to do with her large amounts of family money. He chanted bomb bomb bomb Iran like it was a joke, and said we could stay in Iraq for 100 years. The pathetic old bugger has been WRONG WRONG WRONG much more often than he has ever been right on foreign policy matters. And Republicans, what a bunch of ultra hypocrites anyway trying to make some hay out of Benghazi, when there is NO hay to be made whatsoever. And they conveniently forget how THEY LIED US INTO IRAQ resulting in thousands on both sides dead and mamed, and MANY terrorist attacks happened on their watch including the big one of 9/11 after they disregarded warnings and demoted Richard Clarke, the best anti terror guy we had. Another big one was back in the early 80’s, the attack on the Marine barracks in Lebanon where hundreds of US Marines were killed and mamed despite warnings to increase security or stay out altogether. Did the GOP ever go after Reagan and/or any of his people on that? Of course not. The GOP is just DIGUSTING. A bunch of corrupt LIARS and HYPOCRITES.

  6. Lost in all this total BS is are we any closer to getting the bad guys that did this.
    The following is exactly right.

“Probably because they wanted to go after a lesser official whom
President Barack Obama would like to be secretary of state. Or because
they don’t want to talk about how Republicans have consistently denied
funds to protect diplomatic posts in dangerous places. Or because they
don’t want to discuss how supportive they were last decade when
then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of State
Colin Powell testified that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.”

  7. Margaret Carlson, and many of the lefties that comment here, know full well that Rice is being used by the President as a smoke screen to keep the heat and investigation off of him. Obama is to blame for the 4 dead Americans in Benghazi. Obama approved the instructions given to Rice before she made the circuit. And Obama is the one that should be held responsible. But, since he’s the Protected One, any number of others will be sent in to take the blame and cover his guilt.

    1. I don’t know, EJ. Obama very clearly said that if someone has a problem with what she said, they should talk to him. Haven’t heard a President say that for a while…esp not our last guy.

    2. The hypocrisy of this is amazing to me. Republicans never cared about attacks on our embassies when Republican administrations are in power, but one attack happens when a Democrat is in the White House and they bend logic beyond belief in a partisan attempt to turn this into a scandal.

Attacks on US Embassies/compounds under the BUSH Administration, for which there was no partisan witch-hunt:
      – February 28, 2003: gunmen attack Embassy in Pakistan, killing 2
      – June 30, 2004: suicide bomber attacks Embassy in Uzbekistan, killing 2
      – December 6, 2004: al-Qaeda gunment attack diplomatic compound in Saudi Arabia, killing 9
      – March 2, 2006: car bomb explodes outside consulate in Pakistan, killing 2
      – September 12, 2006: gunmen raid US Embassy in Syria, killing 4
      – March 18, 2008: mortar attack on Embassy in Yemen, killing 2
      – July 9, 2008: armed attack against Consulate in Turkey, killing 6
      – September 17, 2008: car bombings outside Embassy in Yemen, killing 16

Attacks on US Embassies/compounds under the OBAMA Administration:
      – April 5, 2010: attack on US Consulate in Pakistan, kills 8
      – September 11, 2012: attack on US Consulate in Libya, killing 18

I think it is clear that our Embassies are far safer under the Obama administration, but don’t let reality get in the way of your partisan witch-hunt.

  8. When Condi Rice was in line for Sec of State position, some folks brought up her knowingly cheerleading for the Iraq War with knowingly disputed and misleading intelligence that led to a war of aggression by the Bush Admin as evidence of Rice being unsuitable for the job. She talked about aluminum tubes being sent to Iraq, claiming what State department experts at the very same time disputed, that the tubes were for gas centrifuges to enrich uranium for a weapons program. The State department experts said they were not the right type of aluminum for centrifuges and were more likely for missile parts. McCain and Graham staunchly defended her disputed, knowingly, publicly disputed claims as an attack on her character. Susan Rice stated what the “best” intelligence at the time indicated and corrected the account when more information was available… and these same tired, angry old white men eager to please the party spout off a bunch of garbage attacking her character. I don’t know whether she is a qualified candidate or not, but to listen to these two angry, old, white guys carry on over this BS is annoying, inconsistent, partisan political garbage. Why the gop should just go away… they are not a legitimate or serious opposition party. They are spoilers, interested in their own power, nothing else.

  9. Attacks on US Embassies/compounds under the BUSH Administration, for which there was no partisan witch-hunt:

    1. I’m not a fan of Dubwah, but an American ambassador was not murdered on his watch; besides, you’re logic is not correct – other US embassy’s have been attacked besides the ones you’ve listed; please be relistic – an Obama democrat here.

  10. The republicans would normally be supporting Susan Rice 100% if they had not manufactured this “scandal”. Susan Rice owns stock in a number of Canadian oil companies, such as TransCanada (Keystone pipeline) and the banks which finance them. If must be difficult for the republicans now to deal with their masters in the energy industry who would like someone like Rice in a high position. She could influence decisions affecting oil from Canada.
