BATH, Maine — For the fourth time since Oct. 10, Bath police have arrested a local girl on a charge of illegal consumption of liquor by a juvenile.
This time, Lt. Dan Cielinski said, the 17-year-old was so intoxicated police had to take her to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick. The girl’s mother, who lives in Harpswell, met police Thursday night at the hospital, where they served her with the girl’s summons, Cielinski said.
The girl’s father lives in Bath, Cielinski said.
Cielinski said that police responded to a report of juveniles drinking near Bath Middle School. The found the 17-year-old with a female companion who had not been drinking, he said.
Police have made a total of 51 contacts with the girl who was charged, Cielinski said.
“This is one of those kids who has no accountability,” he said. “No one supervises her.”

Sad she is gonna end up in jail for a long time when she gets older
If she lives long enough to “get older.” Ain’t looking good at this point…
IF she gets older.
Has anyone here heard of a disease called alcoholism??? It is no respector of age.
Hey, I’ve heard of that! May have even had a discussion or two, or a hundred, about that exact topic. Also sometimes called a mental obsession combined with a physical compulsion. To quote something I’ve read: “Consumed by the insane urge to continue drinking despite the virtual certainty we would destroy ourselves in the process.”
Really is time to stop the Law Dog Headlines and psychological blame-games and ooh-ohh-ahh-ahh look what she did. Really don’t much mater about what her folks did or didn’t do, what kind of upbringing she had, etc, etc — she seems to be drinking herself to pieces NOW, today, and that’s the #1 problem.
Time to get this girl into detox and a locked 30 day treatment program. The idea might not stick the first time around, but it’ll sure knock hell out of some silly excuses and rationalizations and take the just-having-fun angle out of it.
Try to save a kid or just let her drown in a bottle and say she should’ve known better?
Best answer ever.
I didn’t know you can “catch” alcoholism. Alcoholism is not a disease, it’s a choice. I have had alcoholics in my family stop drinking, because they CHOSE to stop drinking. And greatly helping them to make their choice was a new-found faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the answer to all our problems, but way too many people in the world today just want to keep on mocking him and crucifying him.
You cannot catch the gay either and with that stated.
There are plenty of people that believe in your god and Jesus that have drinking problems. I have heard and read many stories about so called good Christian families where the father was a complete drunk and was very abusive but this man also loved god.
Your Jesus is not the answer to all our the worlds problems and never will be. Yes, religion does some good in this world, there is no denying that but religion also does a lot of harm as well.
This young lady doesn’t need your god or Jesus. She needs serious counseling to find out why at her young age she is a complete mess.
Don’t get around much do you. The American Medical Association calls Alcoholism a disease. You can’t believe just what your shill preaches, okay?
The AMA sees Oxy’s as a pain reliever too. Different views from different vantage points.
It’s much easier to tell a person they have a disease and it isn’t their fault than to tell them they are weak and have no self control. We don’t want people feeling bad about themselves so it isn’t your fault; it’s a disease.
It’s a disease. The things I did because of the disease is my fault and no one elses. Period.
If Jesus is the answer. What was the question?
The only thing being ‘mocked’ here is your psuedo ‘knowledge’ of alcoholism or addiction or genetic predisposition or the physiological changes that occur due to ETOH addiction. Ever hear of delirium tremens? I’m guessing not because you had heard of DT’s you would know one can DIE from DT’s. The ONLY ‘choice’ that is ongoing and clear is that you continue to be willingly and blatantly uneducated regarding a variety of topics- and in this day and age- THAT is a choice. But that’s exactly what happens when you derive all your ‘information’ from one non-scientific, non- evidentiary based book. Try again.
Okay, TLM, not everybody holds an MSW, cool your jets. LOL Of course, it’s easy to step into nature vs. nurture, and the simplest way I’ve heard it explained is that a child of one alcoholic parent is 2X as likely to become one, and with both parents 4X as likely — and that’s enough for me. Then comes dual-diagnosis — which came first, the mental illness or the substance abuse, or was the drinking/drugging self-medicating for a pre-existing problem?
The best line I’ve heard to describe alcoholism is as follows: “We were smitten by the insane urge to continue drinking despite the certainty we would destroy ourselves in the process.”
If the “educated” have such a wealth of knowledge about this addiction, why are there so many alcoholics?
Face it. If you can not eradicate alcoholism, you don’t know as much about it as you think you do.
Jesus is a disease. Alcoholism is actually a disease, it is uncontrollable. One cannot simply just “quit” if they are an alcoholic. It takes a lot more than that. Now, while heavy drinkers can CHOOSE to stop drinking and it may very well work for them, alcoholics cannot.
As an alcoholic, I can tell you for absolute and for certain it is NOT a disease. I know the politically correct thing today is to make excuses for bad behavior, but alcoholism IS behavior.
A person locked in an isolation unit can’t become an alcoholic no matter how many times they are forced to watch “Lost Weekend.”
A disease requires simple exposure to a virus or a genetic defect in your body. Alcoholism requires the person to buy, transport and voluntarily consume alcohol.
Also is there any other disease offering such a simple cure; that cure being “don’t drink?”
Ya forgot “Days Of Wine and Roses,” dang it! LOL The scene with Jack Lemmon tearing up his father-in-laws greenhouse looking for a jug about says it all.
Loved that movie.
So they want to nail this girl to a wall who has problems . Funny how they never charge UMaine students with drinking . Even when they are rushed to the hospital for alcohol poisoning .
Nothing new there. It happens at the High School level as well. An athlete can be all coked up or drunk but it’s just boys being boys. Have the wrong name and be a quiet, non-athletic type and the stuff hits the fan.A high school student can be drunk with his friends and cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage to their school but nothing happens but probation. Even after they get caught again drinking, nothing happens. This girl must not have a high profile parent in Bangor or Cape Elizabeth to keep her out of trouble.
Hope this kid gets the help that she needs.
A lot of it depends on your name and who you know. I just feel the Umaine system covers for kids drinking . Every concert 100s drink almost non get arrested.
Who cares? KIds have to get it out of their system when they are young; especially at a concert.
this makes the news?
Tragic.
Alcohilsm is a disease.
It knows no boundarys.
I hope this girl can get the help she so
desperately needs.
Im sure the family will offer much support in
her time of need.
That poor child… How sad.
A very sad situation…Who was the supplier/contributor?
Partner, you already know the answer to that in the back of your mind, right?
since you put it that way Bill, I’m gonna guess pops liquor cabinet
Hmm, that’s about the mildest way to put it, I guess,…
Nothing wrong with having some fun.
I hope this girl doesn’t have a drivers license or permit. :(
This is ONE of many of the same situations where these minors need to be taken OFF the streets and enrolled in military camp, sent to a program out in the middle of nowhere, or at the very minimum put in Juvenile Detention until they become of age so that when the police use their resources, maybe the laws, and i emphasize MAYBE, will be able to lock her up till she smartens up….Do not blame the parents on this unless you know for certain, she is being parented by the same type of person she is….There is literally NO way to lock your kid in the house and keep them from continuing down this road.
Agreed: it’s not always the parents fault. A military style camp sounds like a good idea. It might be just what she needs.
If your daughter has gone down this route, you’ve failed them somewhere along the way. But don’t blame them, no.
You obviously are oblivious to the peer pressure in schools these days. How is it always the parent’s fault with some of you? Do the parents hand the girl alchohol and say, “Drink Up” ? Not hardly. The problem is with the system that no longer allows you to discipline a child and which caters to allowing the juvenile to commit the same offenses over and over again. As for the previous commenter regarding Juvenile Detention, I would much rather see her in Juvie where she cannot get alchohol and become even further intrenched in its addictive qualities and maybe give her a shot to go off the stuff, than keep allowing her to get out, do the same thing over and over again, and maybe, just possibly, kill herself or someone else because of it. Yes i know, the addicts of bangor are doing so well with treatment, that is why we have a huge drug problem in Bangor, why more Pharmacies have been robbed this year than any previous year and why Methadone clinics keep popping up all over the place bringing even more addicts to town, Yep, i hear ya, treatment is working so much better(Yeah that was extreme sarcasm you sense)
Peer pressure is one thing that all generations have shared. You don’t think the same pressure existed 10, 20, 30 years ago? Most kids do experiment with alcohol at some point, though experimenting and where this girl is at are two very different places. The girl is obviously getting easy, regular access to alcohol and appropriate steps to control the problem clearly haven’t been taken.
Juvie is better than being allowed to live laissez-faire style, though rehab as the cat recommends is probably the best, given how far things have gone.
Oh yes, juvenile detention would help sooooo much (sarcasm).
Are you freakin’ kiddin’ me? Juvenile Detention would only create in this youth feelings of resentment and resistance. Though if she were thrown in juvenile detention she ought to resist.
She needs treatment. For alcoholism. Not jail. Not being locked up.
A statistic waiting to happen. There are very few possibilities of a positive outcome for this young lady at this point. She will probably be found laying in a ditch somewhere and her parents will be devestated and wondering how this could have happened, all the while knowing they could have prevented it with a moderate amount of caring and a little discipline when this girl needed it the most.
Let’s hope the judge that rules on this case gets creative and enforces some sort of rehab for her and not allow her just to plead guilty and pay a fine. So sad.
Look up Thomas Kinkade’s biography http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Kinkade
and tell me alcohoism isn’t a disease and that Jesus is the answer. That talented man’s story may open your eyes. I am a Christian AND a 20 plus year member of 12-step recovery.
Putting the debate aside re AA vs. other forms of treatment, nature vs. nurture, etc. , it is abundantly clear that this girl needs help before she winds up drinking herself to death, or killing someone else while under the influence. She needs detox and treatment, and someone who has the authority to mandate it needs to make it happen if she won’t go willingly.
There’s some GREAT parenting for you….these parents should be ASHAMED of themselves for allowing this child to become this way. Sounds like state services needs to get involved. Her parents obviously do not care what happens to her-not with the police getting involved 51 times with this poor child. State services would be a better option than what she already has for a support system -which appears to be NOTHING. This is why some people should not become parents. I’d like to know why as a minor, that her parents cannot be charged with anything as well? Someone needs to help this child quick-she is well on her way towards destroying herself. Someone needs to help her turn her life around. Getting her out of her current environment, counseling to help her with self esteem issues and Alcoholics anonymous should be the first steps.
Wow, this is a kid in real trouble and not just legally. It’s tough to tell much from the article but it sure sounds like this is a cry for help that mom and dad aren’t hearing.
Hmm, and aren’t we just way too self-impressed about all that. Maybe you forgot that the second half of your user-name is MSW, eh? If you really have to wiki alcoholism and then pretend to have a PhD, you’re one sad sack of spuds. Best get your homework so maybe you’ll graduate HS.
Umm, looks like the parents aren’t being good parents.
