BANGOR, Maine — A cabdriver called police Saturday afternoon to report that he picked up three people and dropped them off on Essex Street but they didn’t pay their $15 fare, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.

While investigating the theft, reported at about 12:30 p.m., Officer Steve Pelletier went into the apartment building the three entered after exiting the cab and found people inside who “seemed intoxicated,” the sergeant said.

“He found [one] hiding behind a door,” Edwards said.

Allen Holt, 41, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for unpaid fines, refused to give his real name even after being asked repeatedly, according to the sergeant.

“He swore on his mother’s grave he was John Anderson,” Edwards said. “The officer had him empty his pockets and he had a bank document with the name Allen Holt.”

Holt, who was one of the three in the cab, also was found with a white powdery substance, Edwards said. He was charged with unlawful possession of synthetic hallucinogenic drugs, or bath salts, refusing to provide his real name, and for the warrant.

Ashley Dahlgre, 21, of Presque Isle also was found at the apartment with a knife with a white powdery substance, Edwards said. She was charged with unlawful possession of synthetic hallucinogenic drugs and trafficking in dangerous knives. Both Dahlgre and Holt were taken to the Penobscot County Jail.

Someone eventually paid the cabdriver, so no theft charges were filed, Edwards said.

  1. We’ve seen it time and time again in greater Bangor: Pay the cabbie before you get high/start the party/rob the bank.

  2. Sleeping during the photo op? Must have been fun reading her rights. When she heard “You have the right to remain silent” she took it as going to sleep to make sure she was silent.

  3. Swore on his mothers grave, did he? Gotta be lying if that old grade-school hoohaw was the best he could come up with, and then a bank slip with his name in his pocket. Allen, 41 and looks 71, already has tombstone eyes. like standing at the edge of his own grave waiting for the final drop-kick. “Hey, kids, this is your brain on bath salts!” Make up flyers and pass ’em around at grade schools.

Ashley, 21, who knows. Girl looks like she ought to be in a community college somewhere and trying to get the hell out of the woods. Just lost, or pretty far gone already — did anybody ever stop to check? As an old timer once told me, “Water seeks it’s own level. So do people.”

    1. What have you done about the problem? You could give them some money and improve the morals …that would help a lot oh great one

  4. Thank heavens the cab driver wasn’t harmed. It’s going to reach a point where cab drivers are going to refuse to pick anyone up for fear of things like this. My my hasn’t
Bangor gone down the tubes over the past few years with drugs.

    1. when your town welcomes the methadone clinics, they are lured from across the country, “build it, invite them, and they will come”…same old rule of business, ‘supply and demand’…there has to be a ‘payoff’ in it somewhere, or they would not have been invited…perhaps it is the slumlords who can now fill their buildings to keep their property taxes paid ? When our town, state, and federal welfare pays their food, shelter, medical, and cash on their ebt cards to supply their habit, the addicts have no incentive to ever quit or become productive taxpayers.

      1. I don’t know what the “pay off” is for methadone clinics etc but it has to be an enticement on some level. I know Bangor has “sold out” to the drug community. It’s unfortunate and it doesn’t appear that the concept of trading on drug for another, such as methadone, is working all that well. I feel badly for Bangor.

  5. Thats what you get for snorting/smoking/shooting up bath salts, whatever the case may be. I just feel bad for the people who were bathing in it, no wonder I noticed an abnormally high number of natural blondes around here. aye.
