BANGOR, Maine — Bangor is one of the 10 best winter vacation destinations in the United States, according to a website that highlights the country’s best places to live and visit.

Livablity.com decided Bangor is the eighth best place in the country to take a winter respite because of its location, less than an hour from a dozen downhill and nordic ski areas, entertainment options and scenery.

“The historic homes and buildings in this cozy New England town tend to captivate visitors, especially when they are covered with fresh fallen snow,” the website states in its post about Bangor. “Streets dating back to the early 19th Century lead to a variety of entertainment options, including live music, bars, theatrical performances, museums and restaurants.”

“Even in cold weather, the Waterfront area along the Penobscot River is a beautiful place to walk, as is the Broadway Historic District, an area filled with homes built by lumber barons of the 1800s,” the website continues.

The website also cites Hollywood Casino, Maine Discovery Museum, snowmobiling options, and the Paul Bunyan statue.

Liveability’s 10 best places to take a winter vacation in the country are: Anchorage, Alaska; Spokane, Wash.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Traverse City, Mich.; Reno, Nev.; Waukesha, Wis.; Missoula, Mont.; Bangor, Maine; Concord, N.H.; and Casper, Wyo.

The list recognizes communities that embrace their cold climates and offer residents and visitors plenty of recreation and entertainment options both indoors and outside, according the website.

  1. I’m putting a 4 SALE sign on my house when I get home from work. The crowds will be coming in by air, rail, car and bus. On second thought, I might just walk the waterfront tonight if I can convince my wife that the boogie man won’t get us.

  2. I think they have a deal to switch back and forth with Portland/Bangor, next month Portland will be the greatest of something, then, Bangor and so on, about all we have in cities safe to visit.

  3. Who wrote this foolishness – the Bangor Chamber of Commerce? Anybody who’s ever stumbled through the barren wasteland that is the ‘waterfront’ in January or February knows that there’s no charm to it. Maybe in August, but surely not in the dead of winter.

    1. It’s not a wasteland.. they actually have made a lot of nice improvements to the waterfront over the years.. what’s so barren about it.. it’s right between Brewer and Bangor

      1. It’s an empty field that offers a view of a frozen river, the industrial wreckage that is the Brewer side of the river and a glimpse of Shaw’s supermarket. What’s so extraordinary about that?

        1. Every year around this time publications come out with their silly lists of “best” this and “best” that. These publications never actually send anybody out to assess anything; they look at websites or crunch mysterious numbers using secret “formulas.”
Nevertheless, the goal is not so much to actually determine the “best” of anything — it’s to get the publication’s name out there so the papers fall for it and provide free advertising. And for some reason, papers continue to fall for it.

  4. I hope the don’t stay in the Efficiency Apartments, or go near Essex Street, First Street or near Dunkin Donuts on Main Street! Maybe if they hussle into Hollywood Gambling…

  5. Hahahaha….. this has got to be a joke. Clearly whoever wrote this has never been to the Bangor area. Bangor is flat and boring for winter enthusiasts. Popular winter activities: downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, ice skating, ice climbing, ice fishing, snowmobiling… hard to come by in Bangor.

    1. All of those activities are readily available to do here, or can be done after a relatively short drive.
Cross country skiing? You can take your pick where you want to go — for free. You can go to Rolland F. Perry City Forest, Walden-Parke Preserve, Northeast Penjajawoc Preserve, the city golf course, Saxl Park — all within the city lines. Soon skiers will be able to tour the golf course under lights.
All of these places are open to snowshoeing as well.
And that’s just within Bangor itself.
Ice skating? The major city parks are set up for skating, plus Sawyer Arena is available (too bad the City Council passed on offering skating at the new arena).
Ice fishing? You can do that, too, within a 30-minute drive of downtown Bangor.

    2. What do you want?
open your back door and have all these activities available with no travel at all.
don’t know many places like that.
And yes i have lived other places.
Maine is a great place to live.
      Quit complaining, or move!!!!
