BELFAST, Maine — Police arrested Paul Henderson, 26, on a domestic assault charge at the Admiral’s Ocean Inn motel on U.S. Route 1 after officers were summoned about a disturbance there.
Belfast Police Chief Mike McFadden said officers Brian Lunt and Mike Rolerson responded at 9:30 a.m. Saturday to a call from the motel, which rents some of its rooms on a weekly basis. They encountered Henderson and several small children in the room in which he and his girlfriend were living, the chief said.
The man told the officers his girlfriend struck him in the face after he told her to leave. Officers observed a red mark on his face.
Reading from the police report, McFadden said Henderson told officers, “She does not pay any of the bills and eats everything in the room.” The woman is pregnant, according to the report. Henderson also said his mother pays for the room.
Officers later found the woman in another room in the motel and she told a different story. She said Henderson had been yelling at her through the night and morning, and when she tried to make a phone call, he ripped the phone from her hand and in the process, pulled her hair and continued to pull it after she let go of the phone.
It was then that she struck him, she told police.
McFadden praised the officers for taking the time to sort out the matter. State law requires an arrest when a complaint of domestic assault is made, but the chief said officers need to investigate carefully rather than making snap judgments about what happened.
