AUBURN, Maine — Every Christmas growing up, Scott and Jon Demers’ grandma made “crabbies,” warm, cheesy crab meat spread over baked English muffins.
As adults they discovered lots of grandmas — and others — make a similar dish, but none had commercialized it.
After a few years of legwork, Scott, 29, a mortgage lender, and his brother Jon, 24, a Lewiston firefighter, opened sales of the frozen appetizer this summer.
Crabbies now are in more than 500 grocery stores.
“We made some tweaks, but it’s really true to what we had growing up at her house,” Scott Demers said. Right down to the name. “Some people will joke about it. Some people say, ‘Oh, that’s catchy.’ I tell you what, no one forgets it.”
Crabbies come in two flavors: original three-cheese and the new spicy chorizo. It’s found in the freezer aisle next to food such as pizza rolls. A bag sells for about $6 for 26 pieces of topped, quartered English muffin.
“It’s cheesy, with a hint of crab, different spices and herbs,” Demers said. Spicy chorizo has “spicy little pieces of Spanish sausage. They’ve got a little kick to them.”
Crabbies are made in Maine with Louisiana crabmeat, though that may change as production threatens to outgrow the current facility, he said.
The appetizer has been picked up by Shaw’s, Market Basket, Big Y, Dave’s Market, Roach Brothers, Giant Eagle and select Hannaford stores. Locally, Crabbies are available in the Lewiston Hannaford and Shaw’s supermarkets in Lewiston and Auburn.
“When we started this thing, we didn’t know how to make the package, follow the FDA regulations, and then how are you going to make it, how you going to sell it, how are you going to ship it?” Jon Demers said. “You have to know the right people and get a little bit of luck to have success in this world. We’ve definitely had a little bit of both.”
Both graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn. Their parents owned a restaurant until a few years ago and had a catering company that they worked in growing up. The brothers began their business as Demers Foods and have since changed to Perfect Party Foods.
“We’re really expansion-minded,” Scott Demers said. “We’re still kind of figuring out where we’re going with the brand.”
The goal for 2013: Develop a snack for stores like Sam’s Club and Costco and expand to one or two more retail products to sell next to Crabbies.
Future snacks have to be high-quality and unique, he said. They don’t plan to limit themselves to seafood.
“We’ve reached out to a couple food scientists,” Jon Demers said. “Obviously, there’s a lot more that goes into it than making the recipe in your kitchen. For product, it’s a whole different ballgame.”
Their grandmother, Myrna Demers of Lewiston, has enjoyed seeing Crabbies come to life.
“She gets a kick out of it,” Scott Demers said. “We said, ‘This year (for Christmas), we’ll make them so you don’t have to bring them.’”

People with the ideas and ambition to do that deserve a round of applause, not a President telling them ‘you didn’t build that’!
Wouldn’t Roche Bros. be a better name for a food store than Roach Bros?
Way to politicize a nice nonpolitical story. Even worse, you blatantly misapplied the presidents quote in doing so. Question: Did these brothers build all of the roads and other infrastructure that is used to get their product to 500 stores or were they built and maintained with tax dollars?
In short it takes the hard work and innovation these guys have applied, and it takes a publicly supported infrastructure to grow an idea beyond your local community. I am not even an Obama supporter, but that is economics 101 stuff.
Way to go! these guys should be praised!
It was inappropriate and cynical the first time it was expressed/explained.
Did the brother’s build the roads and infrastructure? Don’t ask such a silly question. Of course not, but it is available to EVERYONE, including all the people on extended unemployment benefits. At least they had the idea and gumption to do something about it!
Yep they did and I applaud them. So why did you bother with the completely off base political jab? That kind of rhetoric just makes you look like a misinformed ideologue.
Or an avowed misanthrope.
“The true men of old were not afraid when they stood alone in their views.” ~ Chuang Zhu
“But only when those views were not fabrications.” ~ Ang Zhuchu
Fabrications? You can tell when, by whom, and how?
“If you disagree with my ideas, you could explain why. That is what grown ups do” ~ Prickly City
Idea??? It’s a lie, plain and simple. I saw the original statement, before Fox made one of their “creative” edits, which then became gospel to the 47%. Grown ups don’t waste their (and others) time spreading untruths. Enjoy your crabbies.
Was that like the rest of the media taking Romney’s 47% percent out of context? The number was right, but the rest was nothing more than kissing up to potential donors IN A PRIVATE SETTING! Whether either hold those beliefs down deep, their statements were manipulated by the media of both leanings (who watches FOX?) At least Romney wasn’t sitting in office or speaking to the public.
Oh! seafood, especially crab, shouldn’t be buried in 3 cheeses. It makes it nothing more than a filler.
You’re kidding, right? The ultimate irony is that Willard wound up with 47% of the vote. Poetic justice.
Fabrications was more than a stretch.
Why did I mention it? Because so many hard working entrepreneurs like those were denigrated by that remark. I took offense at it because of who said it. And i’m certainly not uninformed nor an ideologue. Quite the opposite, actually.
I am curious, though, how I misapplied the quote; because he was talking about big business?
On second thought, don’t answer that. Tired of arguing a point with two finger typing.
If you took offense because of who said it… then your use of it is now clear. I did not vote for him, I can fault Obama for plenty, but that quote was clearly about the infrastructure all business uses to succeed and not a claim that people don’t work hard to build what they have. Saying otherwise is partisan rhetoric and it makes conservatives look bad. Please stick to honest discourse.
Exactly! All businesses, and they all started as small business. None should be denigrated as all have used existing infrastructure (excepting Henry Ford. The roads were built after his contraption came out). IMHO, the fact that that downgrading of American effort came from a sitting President was far worse than a candidate’s might be.
That IS honest discourse. I don’t understand your accusation that it’s not, nor such offense of my first mention of it. Accuse the penguin commenters of that. Now, the discourse IS over. Sorry you’re so sensitive…
It’s not what a president shoul openly say. Maybe in this world but not in the one I grew up in. Times are changing
Isnt the political situation about not knowing future taxes keeping small bussineses from opening or expanding?
What is the Penguin administration going to do to keep these guys from moving out of State to expand their business?
The first thing the penguin will do is void the “green energy” requirements set in place by the Elephant Ear administration. Hopefully then we will be able to have competitive electric rates that will encourage businesses to stay. Cannot imagine a business wanting to pay 30% more for electricity……
Great to see these two entrepreneurs capitalizing on grandma’s treat and successfully turning it and one of Maine’s natural resources into “Crabbies.”
Another new business for Maine right off the kitchen table.
Errrr, did you read the story? They’re not using Maine crab at all which ill say is a real puzzler. Surely shipping crab here from the gulf is not cheap!
Maines crab industry is to inconsistend, not enough pickers, and a boat load of tendonitis claims. Also the taste is very different.
Right now, it’s very difficult to get fresh Maine crab meat. I work for a seafood distributor and my boss can seldom get a hold of fresh picked Maine crab. We sell live crab-but folks don’t want to “work” for it.
Yummy. Look forward to trying these. Louisiana crab is way ok with me.
Good luck gents.
So they are using BP tainted crab meat? I know I sure wouldn’t buy that!
Congrats! If I see ’em I’ll buy ’em.
Maybe Lobbies next?
