BAILEYVILLE – John C. Hazelwood, 82, husband of Mary (Perryman) Hazelwood, died Dec. 11, 2012, at a Bangor Hospital. He was born June 24, 1930, in Calais, son of Charles and Winifred (Chase) Hazelwood.
John graduated from Scarsdale High, Scarsdale, N.Y., in 1948. In 1952 he graduated from the University of Maine, Orono and began his career in Insurance with Royal-Globe Insurance Co. He served various field and commercial underwriting positions in Portland, Roanoke, Va., and Boston. In 1969, he returned to Maine as commercial lines manager for W.C. Ladd Insurance Agency, Rockland. In 1977, he and his wife opened their own agency, Jewett and Hazelwood in Calais. This agency later merged with Fenderson Insurance where he served as assistant vice president until his retirement. From that time until the present he continued to do insurance inspections for the agency now known as F.A. Peabody, Calais. John was proud of his years in raising and showing purebred dogs. He almost always personally showed his champion bloodhound “Willie” and took first place in many hound groups and even a best in show. John was a past president of the American Bloodhound Club. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends. A devoted father, he was always interested in young people, he served as both a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader and also coached Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. He was a frequent spectator at Calais Blue Devils sports. An avid fan of the Red Sox and Patriots, he had high hopes for this year! John was a longtime active member and past King Lion of Calais Lions Club. He was a committed member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Calais, and had served as vestryman and delegate to Diocesan Convention.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Margaret Hazelwood of Somerville, Mass.; his sons, Francis Hazelwood and his wife, Lauryl Williams, of Windham and Frederick Hazelwood of Bangor; two grandsons, Gregory Hazelwood of Windham and Aaron Hazelwood of Portland; his brother, Robert Hazelwood and his wife, Shirley, of Hampden; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Hazelwood of New York City and Ann Burke of Red Bank, N.J.; two special cousins, Winnie and Don Rogers of Baileyville and New Jersey; many nieces and nephews; a special “almost daughter,” Linda Severance; and two feline companions, Crumpet and George. John was predeceased by his parents; sister, Florence Hazelwood; and his brothers, Charles Hazelwood and James Hazelwood.
Funeral services will begin 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 23 Church St., Calais, with Pastor David Sivret officiating. Services by Mays Funeral Home, Calais and Eastport. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.maysfuneralhome.com.
