BARING, Maine — A Princeton woman was killed Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on Route 1.
Lynn Roderick, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, according to Maine State Trooper Chad Lindsey.
Her 8-year-old grandson, who was the only passenger in her vehicle, was treated for minor injuries at Calais Regional Hospital and released, the trooper said in a press release.
Roderick was driving north on Route 1 about 2:20 p.m. when she apparently attempted to pass another vehicle. Her blue Dodge Ram pickup truck struck a vehicle driven by Steven Scott, 47, of Calais head-on, sending both vehicles careening off the road, according to Lindsey.
Roderick, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected through the passenger’s window of her truck.
Scott also was taken to the Calais hospital where he was treated for lacerations and abrasions, the release said.
Maine State Police were assisted at the scene by U.S. Border Patrol, Baileyville Police, Calais and Baring Fire Departments and Downeast EMS.
My condolences to the family. Always so sad to hear such news, especially this time of year.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. So sad for her grandson to have to witness something like this.

so sad, yet another granchild witnessing such tragedy of a grandparent as there was another article a couple days ago of a grandmother and 11yr old granddaughter in a tragic accident. my heart goes out to all families whom have recently suffered such heartache so close to the holidays.
Why is that stupid?? People pass vehicles all the time. And I happen to live RIGHT DOWN THE ROAD from this accident, and it is one STRAIGHT shot right through Baring!! So, it wasn’t like she was passing inappropriately!! It’;s NOT stupid, it’s SAD!!
Apparently if she struck an oncoming vehicle “head on” as reported then the passing was inappropriate…..while indeed it is most sad, it in the least sense was most avoidable……tragic happening for all involved…..
Sad, yes. Why is that stupid? If you live RIGHT DOWN THE ROAD from this accident, you should know there are 2–count them- intersections right there. Also she pulled out into the path of another vehicle. So I guess she was passing “inappropriately:”, not to mention illegally. I hope I never meet you passing appropriately as I travel from Woodland to Calais!
This is a horrible thing for a family to go through just before Christmas.
Just out of curiosity, why is it,after the fire department extinguishes any fire and performs the extrication, the EMTs save lives and ease injuries, they only get credit for “assisting” the police at a scene?
The police always have “control” of the scene. That is their responsibility. EMTs and firefighters often do more than extrication or treating injuries. Those first responders usually remain at the scene (except for EMTS who take the patients off to the hospital, if there are any) and help in whatever ways they can, which is why the term assisting came into use.
Very sad, especially just before Christmas. Please respect the family, and keep the uncalled for comments to yourself. Very sad people seem to need to comment negatively when something so tragic happens.
More than likely road glare. At this point of the road, she would have been traveling in a Southwest direction, and it was partly cloudy yesterday. Add to that wet roads, and I’m sure she was probably facing right towards the sun. Your comment was in very poor taste. No need to respond, as I think those on this comment page already have got a handle on the type of person you are.
