AUSTIN, Texas — Former President George H.W. Bush is in the intensive care unit of a Houston hospital and is in “guarded condition,” family spokesman Jim McGrath said Wednesday.
“The president is alert and conversing with medical staff, and is surrounded by family,” McGrath said in a statement.
“Following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever, President Bush was admitted to the intensive care unit at Methodist Hospital on Sunday where he remains in guarded condition,” McGrath said.
Doctors at Methodist Hospital “continue to be cautiously optimistic about the current course of treatment,” McGrath said.
The 88-year-old was admitted to the hospital Nov. 23 for bronchitis.
Bush, the 41st president and a Republican, took office in 1989 and served one term as president. The father of former President George W. Bush, he also served as a congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, CIA director and vice president for two terms under Ronald Reagan.

Tasteless and classless. In fact, I suggest BDN consider removing this and blocking you due to the threatening tone to a former president.
His Maker will make that decision. Pastor Bob
So sad. Super nice man.
You clearly don’t know the man. He had long-time affairs with women from both the US and Italy while Barbara Bush was at home in Texas and he shared a NYC apt. with the Italian beauty. More important than the hypocrisy of Mr. Family Values, until he was thankfully defeated for reelection by Bill Clinton in 1991, Bush refused to declare his only home–the Walker Point estate–as his primary residence but only as his summer residence. He thereby got out of paying hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, in Maine property taxes. It didn’t matter how many days a year he lived at Walker Point. An honorable citizen would have obeyed the law. But not Bush. Ordinary Mainers were thereby deprived of tons of money until George’s friends in Texas paid for a home there after the White House years. He is a consummate jerk who deserves contempt, not sympathy. Rest assured he’ll have others pay his medical bills.
Those others will be the American taxpayer. And trust me,he’s getting five star treatment.
And just what is it you think your post adds to the conversation? There is a time and a place for such comments and this isn’t it. YOU are the consummate jerk for using this forum to castigate the man. You speak of hypocrisy- look at your hero, Bill Clinton, who has the morals of an ally cat. He sat in MY White House and told lie after lie after lie, shaking his bony finger while proclaiming, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman”. How about John Kerry, who didn’t dock his yacht in Massachusetts so he wouldn’t be required to pay the taxes. Finally, how many affairs did John F. Kennedy have?
This is exactly in the time for exposing self-righteous George H. W. Bush’s “double life.” His long-time affair with his second girlfriend continued into his Vice Presidency and, typically, was left out of the Wash. Post police report when the two were in a minor D.C. traffic accident only because of Bush’s political clout. Did any of these Dems proclaim Family Values as their mantra? Hardly. Bush cost Maine taxpayers tons of money. Clinton, Kerry, and JFK did not. Meanwhile the saintly Barbara Bush forced George W. to break his engagement with a long-time Houston girlfriend whom he was to marry before his senior year at Yale because one of her parents had, after their divorce, remarried a Jew! “No Jews in the Bush family,” Barbara famously told her son. All documented, rest assured. And taxpayers, to repeat, will pay for #41’s medical expenses.
He still has time to confess…perhaps he’ll do the right thing
Confess to what? He’s not Catholic.
If I had to guess I’d say something to do with the theory that Bush was part of the conspiracy to kill JFK?
why would he want JFK killed
Honestly I have no idea. I’ve seen it a couple time both on tv shows and things online. Other than the fact that JFK died and the story presented to the public seems bogus, I’ve never really delved into it.
No need to go with “theories”.

Interesting. Thanks for the link Tux.
I would think he is referring to confession as to God, in the name of Jesus, as articulated in the Lord’s Prayer.
A real Pastor would never make a comment like that.
Real pastors make hateful comments all the time. Professing to preach the Gospel does not necessarily make a person good, honest, wise or at one with God.
Some Pastors may make hateful comments. I know some who wouldn’t.
Well he must not be a real pastor, because like you said Real pastors would not say that.
Prayers for good health and long life…
I’m not a fan but I wish no ill will towards him and I only have positive thoughts for his family. Knowing you might lose a loved one is never a good feeling.
I am a fan and even had the occasion to spend a little social time with him. A genuine person to the very end. He has my thoughts and prayers. Godspeed sir.
Exactly Kevin! My dad is in the hospital right now and it is a horrible feeling. Why are people so cruel? I voted for Bill Clinton, but I truly believe George Bush is a good man and I hope for the best.
Best wishes to your father, you and your family. I lost my mother in 2009 so I know the pain.
Thanks Kevin. I’m sorry for the loss of your Mom. I hate to see any family go through that pain.
All political feelings aside, he’s a good all around human and has had a good and full life. We can’t expect him or Mandela to be with us much longer and it will be our loss. Such is the cycle of life.
I just hope they don’t drag it out for a week like they did with RR.I thought Nancy was going to fall into the grave from grief and exhaustion by the end.
