WELLS, Maine — A 55-year-old woman crashed her SUV into the Rite Aid Pharmacy in Wells on Sunday after she inadvertently hit her gas pedal instead of her brakes, said a Wells police corporal.

The accident happened about 11 a.m. as the woman was pulling into the store’s parking lot, Wells police Cpl. Stephen Borst said Sunday afternoon. Neither the woman nor her 25-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in the 2008 Dodge Durango, were seriously injured, he said.

Also escaping injuries were employees and staff who were inside the building at the time, Borst said.

Borst said that after the motorist hit the gas, her Durango “jumped the curb and went through the front wall near the front entrance. The vehicle penetrated about a foot into the store,” knocking health and beauty supplies off their shelves.

A photograph taken of the store’s interior showed that most of the items knocked to the floor were Burt’s Bees products.

Borst said that despite the crash, the store was allowed to remain open after an inspection by the town’s code enforcement officer and fire department.

He said the woman’s SUV likely will be declared a total loss because of frame and suspension damage. He pegged damage to the Rite Aid at $7,000 to $10,000.

No charges will be filed in connection with the crash, Borst said.

      1. She must be a ” No Park for Me ” supporter or perhaps was just getting a refill on her methadone script. I also wonder why the woman wasn’t named.

  1. So after driving for the last 30+ years she forgot where the brake and accelerator were? I’ll never figure out how that happens. She probably ought to be made to do a driving test again if that the best she can do.

  2. Well she does drive a Durango, so I am sure she will be able to afford her premiums going THROUGH the roof after the money they will have to pay to fix the Rite Aid.

  3. This likely comes down to an error of driver inattention. Not paying attention to what you are doing is what can make you forget which foot you need to use. Driver inattention is a serious problem. Whether you are simply thinking of some other thing or embroiled in a conversation, it does not leave your full attention for driving. While often no charges are given, the insurance company bills it as an at-fault accident.

  4. I’m surprised Rite-Aid doesn’t just close all their stores in Maine and leave. If they’re not being robbed, they’re being rammed.

  5. Sunday…hmmmm…driving with snow boots, perhaps? Lack of “feel” for the pedals? Something for all of us, whatever gender, whatever age, need to be careful about!

      1. Accidents? Accidents are when a meteor comes from outer space and smashes into your hood. Unavoidable. Act of God. Unforeseeable.

But CRASHES on the other hand, are caused by something(s) that someone(s) did, or did not, do: the Rite Aid architect failed to specify steel posts along the curb next to to the store to prevent vehicles from hitting the building, or at the least, high concrete curbs or barriers on the ground. OR: or the driver failed to realize that she had less “feel” for the pedals wearing snow boots? Maybe switch into a sneaker for the right foot when driving?

Crashes could have any number of “small” causes. A town could fail to reattach a road name sign, and a driver looking for that road could be craning their neck around, and end up in a ditch. Is the driver at fault? Sure, they allowed themselves to be distracted; they are in charge of their own vehicle.

So maybe 95% is their fault. But 5% might be the town office, that despite repeated notices from residents, over several months, fails to reattach that road sign.

        Accident, act of God.

        Crashes, someone did something wrong.

Fix up the way you drive!

        1. First off you need to look up the meaning of “accident’..Then we can discuss the meaning of a ‘natural Disaster” like a meteor or hurricane hitting…OK ?? Let me know when you “smarten up…LOL…

  6. Is the Obumble sticker on the car damaged? Conservatives never get into car accidents! Rah rah responsibility!

  7. “No charges will be filed in connection with the crash, Borst said.”

    This is getting ridiculous.

Usually when people destroy property or maim and kill others they are charged for their mistakes, but as long as you do it with a car the police don’t seem to care.
