In all, 23 people were killed in 19 incidents, including 10 domestic violence homicides.
Fourteen people were fatally shot, and five people were fatally stabbed.
Bangor, Lamoine and Old Orchard Beach were the only cities with multiple homicides. In Bangor, six people were killed in four incidents. In Lamoine, three people were killed in two incidents. And in Old Orchard Beach, two people were killed in two incidents. Maine’s largest city, Portland, saw one homicide in 2012; Lewiston and Auburn both saw none.
Penobscot and York counties saw the most homicides, with eight and six, respectively. Androscoggin, Franklin, Oxford, Piscataquis, Sagadahoc and Washington counties all had none.
December and July tied for the deadliest months, with four homicides each. June and January both had no homicides.
Old Orchard Beach and Lamoine are towns, not cities. The homicide count in Lamoine was actually 4 as the shooter was also killed by state police.
The police killing a murderer doesn’t count as homicide.

The point though would be that it is not counted as a crime.

When a person is executed it is listed as a homicide. It is the intentionally killing of another human being.

Yes, the list includes both the stabbing in Bangor and the shooting deaths in Biddeford.
It would be interesting to know what the homicide rate per capita is in Lamoine this past year as compared to big cities such as NYC or Detroit. It may turn out to be one of those questions that you really don’t want answered! If it ranks up there, that is not the dubious distinction a Town would want to be known for.

Unfortunately, these are funny numbers in large part. Using the definition used by most states for “Domestic Violence Homicide”, there were only 3 in Maine during 2011. Domestic Violence Homicide, in fact, requires an intimate partner relationship. But it feels better for folks in Augusta to write off an inordinate and unreal percentage of homicides in Maine to DVH. And unfortunately, certain deaths (such as Caryl Baird’s in Sebec Lake, in August) are easier and more mindlessly written off as non-homicides by certain decision makers within the State Police, despite evidence and involved parties to the contrary. Ms. Baird’s death was announced as “no foul play” by Steve McCausland as her body was being pulled from the lake…despite the fact that the sole person with whom she was in the lake that night had a Protection From Abuse Order against him. By her.

As I recall the cause of death for three people killed in Bangor in the burning car was undetermined. Yeah they were shot, but the story said that two were still alive when the fire started. spin spin spin.

Interesting, informative, and very disturbing. Is it possible just to add a line or two stating how many of these deaths are drug related? It would be even more interesting, especially now that we have been informed that the Elm Street stabbing is connected to the use of Bath Salts.
It’s really unfortunate that drunk drivers killing their friends, family & other people doesn’t count as a homicide. In my opinion, killing someone with a car is just as reckless and criminal as killing someone with a gun or knife. A drunk driver is operating a multiple thousand pound weapon. How does that make a drunk driver any less responsible for taking someone’s life? Our court systems are seriously twisted.
