SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Police in South Portland are accepting firearms from the general public from those who want to get rid of them.

The department will accept any unwanted, forgotten, unsafe or potentially illegal firearms or ammunition, Lt. Frank Clark said in a news release Wednesday.

The service comes in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., in which 26 were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Clark said residents are advised that this service is a not an investigative effort, and no questions will be asked upon turning in firearms or ammunition.

All firearms police receive will be destroyed and not resold. To turn over a firearm, contact South Portland police’s Community Relations department at 799-5511, ext. 7236 or 7242.

  1. I hope that there aren’t any historic or highly collectible firearms turned in, it is a shame how many truly valuable old firearms get turned into these programs for little to nothing of their value. I’ve heard stories of some very fine and valuable rifles and shotguns getting put under the saw.

    1. There was just a lady in Connecticut tried to turn in a German gun valued over 150,000 for about a hundred dollar gift card. The cop knew what it was and told her. Its one of only a handful that remain of that model.

  2. I will accept any unwanted LEGAL firearms & ammo. Leave your number
and I will get back to you ASAP!

  3. Great idea, but this is like asking people to turn in painkillers. The people that turn them in aren’t the ones that abuse them or leave them around so others can get their hands on them.
