BANGOR – Madeline J. Brown, 81, died peacefully Jan. 5, 2013, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born March 11, 1931, to Susie and Fred Johnson of Jackson.
She graduated from Husson College and married the love of her life, Thomas Brown, in June 1952. She was predeased by Thomas, in 1975. They had three children together. Scott, the oldest, died in 1973 in a car accident. Madeline had a life of caregiving and volunteering. After her husband died in 1975, she took her sister in and cared for her for many years, until she had to go to a nursing home. Then she volunteered at Bangor City Nursing, Maine Veterans Home and Westgate Manor – she sat with people with Alzheimer’s so their spouses could get a break; she was a literacy volunteer,, was an RSVP volunteer; and she also worked many years as a volunteer at Red Cross, until her dementia began to take a toll.
She is survived by her son, Fred Brown and wife, Sonya, and their two children, Matthew and Michelle; and daughter, Debra and husband, Mark Leen, and their two daughers, Sarah and Megan. She also is survived by five great-grandchildren.
As a last act of giving, she has donated her body to New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. There will be a memorial service at a later date.
