BANGOR — Hungry bowlers are packing the booths and tables at the Back Alley Pub.
And other diners seeking delicious fare are joining them at the new restaurant, which opened earlier this year at the Family Fun Bowling Center, 15 Hildreth St., Bangor.
Tina Saccuto and Dwayne MacLeod own the Back Alley Pub, which features traditional pub fare, such as sandwiches and baskets, pizza, burgers, hot dogs, fries, nachos, onion rings, and chicken strips. Saccuto managed the Fairways Grille at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course restaurant for nine years; she brings to Back Alley Pub the Perry’s Fried Clam Recipe, popular among golfers and now popular among bowlers and everyone else dining at the new restaurant.
The menu includes chicken wings, dough boys, fresh clams, haddock, paninis, and Philly cheese steak sandwiches. The full bar serves beer and non-alcoholic drinks and a specialty drink called “Sex In The Alley,” a blend of fresh squeezed lemonade and sweet tea vodka.
With a bright, sunlit interior, the Back Alley Pub features booth and table dining, a full bar, a pool table, and two TVs for watching sports events. A takeout window connects the restaurant with the adjacent 20-lane bowling alley, built in 1959 and purchased by Andy Meucci and his family in 1967.
Meucci is pleased that Saccuto and MacLeod have opened the Back Alley Pub. “Tina’s business and my business, they go together,” he said. “People are always looking to get something to drink or something to eat.
“The restaurant is a big part of our business,” Meucci said. In fact, as part of the dining and entertainment experience at the Back Alley Pub, free games of bowling are offered with daily restaurant specials.
The Back Alley Pub is open 3-11 p.m., Monday; 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-12 midnight, Friday; 9 a.m.-12 midnight, Sunday; and 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Sunday. Happy Hour runs from 3-6 p.m., daily. Diners are invited to drop by any time during regular business hours to “enjoy a good meal in a relaxing atmosphere,” Saccuto said.
She noted that the Back Alley Pub can cater birthday parties, family reunions, Christmas parties, and other events on site. Such events can feature bowling next door and hot food served by the restaurant staff, which includes two people who worked for Saccuto at the Fairways Grille.
Family Fun Bowling Center features synthetic-surface lanes (installed three years ago), automatic scorers, and shoe rentals, among other bowling-oriented amenities. The center sponsors summer and winter bowling leagues, youth bowling leagues, Special Olympian bowling on Friday afternoons, and other bowling events.
“We do a dozen bowl-athons a year” as fund-raisers for different non-profit groups, Meucci said.
