BANGOR, Maine — A woman escaped serious injury despite driving a car that wound up swiping into a guardrail, skidding to the opposite side of the road, and vaulting over a snowbank onto its roof on I-95 north near Union Street Tuesday afternoon.

The accident was reported at 2:48 p.m. near Exit 184.

“I still need to speak to at least one other witness before I can wrap things up,” said Maine State Police Sgt. Sean Hachey. “It’s too early to tell if charges will be filed until we complete our investigation.

“If anyone witnessed the accident, we would appreciate hearing from them.”

The accident occurred just past the Union Street onramp onto I-95 north.

“What we do know is there were two northbound vehicles and as they were going past Union Street, they collided,” Hachey said.

The two vehicles involved were a 2008 silver Saturn Vue and 2000 blue Chevy Cavalier:

“There was some contact and that sent the blue Chevy into the guardrail and it skidded across the interstate and struck the snowbank, and kind of shot up into the snowbank and flipped onto its roof,” Hachey said. “There was just one person in that car and she was helped out of the car by a passerby.”

Hachey said the Vue had some body damage but was driveable and the driver — the only occupant of the vehicle — was allowed to continue on their way after being interviewed. The Chevy had quite a bit of damage and was towed from the scene.

The Chevy’s driver was complaining of neck pain and taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center by ambulance.

Bangor Fire Department emergency personnel also responded to the scene, which was kept open to traffic in both lanes even during initial rescue and the removal of the Cavalier from where it rested on part of the grounds of Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

“We had traffic coming on from Union and it was reduced as far as the flow, but both lanes were still open because of how wide it is there,” Hachey said.

The scene was cleared by 3:30 p.m.
