AUGUSTA, Maine — Human remains discovered in February on Vaughn’s Island off Kennebunkport are those of two boating students who had been missing since December, according to the state medical examiner’s office.
Spokesman Mark Belserene of the medical examiner’s office confirmed Tuesday that the remains are those of Zachary Wells, 21, of Burlington, Vt., and Prescott Wright, 23, of Barnstable, Mass.
The spokesman said the identifications were made through DNA testing conducted at the Maine State Police Crime Lab. A man walking his dog on Vaughn’s Island had discovered one set of human remains on Feb. 10, while examiners were brought another set a week later.
“The police had been checking the area and they’ve continued to bring us some remains and we continued to test them,” said Belserene.
Wells and Wright were enrolled at The Landing School in Arundel. They had been missing since Dec. 20.
