BREWER AND ELLSWORTH – Barbara A. Johns, 71, wife of the late Bobby L. Johns, died March 8, 2013, at Collier’s Rehab & Living Center, Ellsworth, where she had been residing for several years. She was born Aug. 18, 1941, in Bangor, the daughter of Darrell K. and Doris E. (Nix) Bridgham.
Barbara was a graduate of Bangor High School, class of 1959, where she lettered in basketball, volleyball and Junior Girls’ Rifle Team. Her skills with a rifle earned her recognition in 1957 from National Rifleman’s Association as an expert marksman. As a young woman, she was active in Girl Scout Troop 43 of Fairmount School, Bangor YMCA, Columbia Street Baptist Church and Camp Tanglewood, Lincolnville, where she was a junior camp counselor. She spent many wonderful summers at the family camp on Harriman Pond. After graduation she worked as a supervisor for New England Telephone and Telegraph Company before becoming a full time homemaker. She and her husband were longtime residents of Parkway North in Brewer. When she was able, she enjoyed gardening and participating in volleyball, softball and bowling leagues. For many years, she contributed to Arthritis Foundation and Humane Society of the United States.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen Douglass and her two sons, Keegan and Keston, and Kelly Monahan and her husband, Stephen, and their children, Sarah, Hannah, Jessica and Stephen Jr.; and one sister, Patricia Freeman of Hermon. Barbara was predeceased by, and has gone home to be with her parents; her husband; and a brother, Harry Bridgham. Barbara’s family gratefully thanks the staff at Collier’s for their care of Barbara during her residence there.
Private burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer, will be later in the spring. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mount Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401.
