BUCKSPORT – Margaret Helen (Kenney) Mercer, 95, passed away March 13, 2013, at the home of her daughter on Verona Island, with her two daughters at her side. Margaret was born Sept. 1, 1917, in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Fred L and Annie L (Genn) Kenney.
She graduated from Oblate Seminary, Bucksport, and in 1941 married the love of her life, Edward H. Mercer. They were married for 70 years. When first married, Margaret worked side-by-side with Edward at T&K grocery store and when he was enlisted in World War II she worked his job to secure his position upon his return. Together Margaret and Edward ran their own grocery store on Lower Main Street. In time Margaret became a full time mom to her two daughters, who for the rest of her days she called “my girls.” Volunteerism was to be a large part of Margaret’s life. She began with enthusiasm, total dedication, her beautiful smile and wonderful sense of humor. She became superintendent of a very small Sunday school and within a few years it was bustling with many new students excited to see what was going to be learned the next Sunday. After many dedicated years with the Sunday school, she retired and became involved with TOPS, spending many years as the state coordinator. With TOPS she not only traveled the world, but also met many wonderful, lifelong friends. Family and all holidays brought her great joy.
Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Wendy Carpenter and her husband, Thomas, of Verona Island and Nancy Mercer-Dumas and her husband, Robert, of Lamoine; three grandchildren, Dina B. Goodwill and partner, Jimi Hart, of Minneapolis, Ric Goodwill and his wife, Roseanne, of Evanston, Ill., and their children, Renard, Miranda and Serafina, and Greg Goodwill and his wife, Victoria, of South Portland, and their children, Marley and Riley. She is also survived by her faithful canine companion, Annie. She was predeceases by her parents; and her husband of 70 years, Edward H. Mercer II, who passed away July 13, 2011. The family acknowledges the love and kindness of special caregivers, Stormi Wentworth, Rhonda Gilman, Liza Kling, Nicky Yeo, Patty Gray and Kathy Murray.
