LISBON – Roger F. Furbish, 87, passed away early morning March 16, 2013, in Lewiston, with his wife by his side. He had suffered a stroke Feb. 24, 2013. Roger was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, son of Church H. and Dorothy (Mercier) Furbish of Princeton. He and his childhood sweetheart, Rita E. Richards of Princeton, were married Feb. 3, 1945, in Princeton.
Roger returned to college when he was no longer able to work in the family store in Princeton and earned an accounting degree from Husson College in 1961. Roger worked more than five years in Washington, D.C., returning to Maine to work for Bates Manufacturing Co. and Bath Iron Works, retiring in 1984. Although he had endured chronic pain since age 18 due to osteoarthritis, Roger displayed a positive attitude and enjoyed life to the fullest. He liked to walk and would walk on his lunch hours. After he took early retirement in 1984, he would walk two miles from his home to Lisbon Post Office every day that he possibly could. He ended up having a total of seven joint replacements. Special friends for more than 30 years were Ernest and Lucille Moreau and their family of Arundel. He also enjoyed the friendship in late years with the friends at Seniors Plus and MTM Center, Lisbon Falls.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rita of Lisbon; two sons, John F. Furbish of Turners Falls, Mass., and Richard A. Furbish and wife, Patricia Crawford, of Austin, Texas; two grandsons, Eric J. Furbish and wife, Yogita Sharma, of Austin, Texas, and Frank Petrov of Richmond, Va.; great-granddaughter, Sophia D. Petrov of Richmond, Va.; sister, Marjorie Hold of Clearwater, Fla.; two nieces, Karen E. Hold of Baileyville and Brenda D. Smith of Essex Junction, Vt.; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
At Roger’s request, there will be no funeral and the burial will be held at a later date in Princeton. Dostie Funeral Home, Lewiston.
