HOLDEN – Viva Lola Day, 87, went home to be with the Lord, peacefully with her family by her side, March 23, 2013, after spending time at Winterberry Heights Memory Care, Bangor. Viva was born July 18, 1925, in Lincoln, the daughter of Villa Martha (Libby) Blake and George Dearborn Blake.
Viva graduated from Mattanawcook High School. She married Ralph E. Day Jr. of Holden. She loved to tell the story of how she rode a train back and forth from Holden to Bangor for her job at the bank. Viva had a love for gardening, and always had beautiful flower gardens that she tended to. She was also a very talented artist who loved to paint. While raising her children, Viva went to the University of Maine, Orono, part time and earned her bachelor’s degree. She was a teacher at Holden Elementary and Holbrook Junior High for 25 years. She was a very generous and giving person, who loved to have her family near. She loved the Lord and was a longtime member of Holden Congregational Church, and sang in the choir for many years.
Viva was predeceased by her husband, who was the love of her life for 60 years; her beloved son, Daniel Webster Day; and sisters, Shirley Brehaut and Rita Gifford. Viva is survived by two children and their spouses, Dale and Doug Parent of Holden and Devon and Lori Day of Holden; one brother, Dale Blake and his wife, Gloria, of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Jen and Dan Day of Bangor, Nate Ellis Jr. of Brewer, Amanda and Kristen Ellis of Holden; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mary Dresser, Betty Brehm and Norma Wieman. The family expresses a special thanks to the caring employees at Winterberry Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care for all their love and support.
A funeral service will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Grace Bartlett officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Rooms at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith after the service. Interment will be at Hart’s Corner Cemetery later in the spring. Those who wish to remember Viva in a special way may make gifts in her memory to Holden Congregational Church, P.O.
