BANGOR – Mary S. Vanidestine, 91, passed away March 28, 2013, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born in 1921, in Veazie, the daughter of Wyatt and Nellie Spencer.
She was employed at K-Mart for 16 years until her retirement and was a member of Veazie Senior Citizen Club for many years. Mary, also fondly known as “Nana,” loved her family and always went out of her way to make you feel welcomed. With a mischievous twinkle in her eyes and a charming story to share, she could make you laugh until tears came. She is smiling at us now so that we will continue to enjoy life and cheer for the Red Sox, as she did for many years. We will miss her physical presence and hold her spirit close forever. We love you, Nana.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jim, in 1986; two sisters, Isabel King of Veazie and Ethel Thorpe of Arizona; and three brothers, Wyatt, Charles and Albert, all of Veazie. She is survived by her three sons, James and wife, Doris, of Bangor, Tom and wife, Honey, of North Carolina, and Dan and wife, Andrea, of Glenburn; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; and one very special grandchild, Todd Vanidestine. Our tremendous gratitude goes out to her special niece, Gwen Caron; and special nephew, Joe “Buster” King and wife, Barbara, who visited Mary numerous times during her stay at Ross Manor. The family thanks the wonderful and caring staff at Phillips-Strickland House Assisted Living where she resided since July 2011. Thank you to Ross Manor for their great care and support during this difficult time.
At Mary’s request there will be no visiting hours. Graveside service will be held at a future date at Fairview Cemetery, Veazie. One of Mary’s many joys in life was dog sitting our many dogs that we adopted from the animal shelter. Those who wish to remember Mary in a special way can send a gift to Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
