BANGOR, Maine — A local transient ended up behind bars Thursday after concealing DVDs in his backpack at Walmart, police said.

Police were dispatched to the Stillwater Avenue store just after 3 p.m., when loss prevention staff reported that 23-year-old Shawn Beede was concealing DVDs in his backpack, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

Officer Tim Wheelden responded to the scene, Edwards said. Loss prevention staff had recognized Beede from a theft in the spring of 2012, and he had been given a trespass warning not to return.

The DVDs were recovered from Beede’s backpack and he was taken into custody and charged with theft and criminal trespass, the sergeant said.

Beede’s criminal history dates back to 2009, according to court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News.

In January 2012, Beede was arrested for filing a false public report after he told police that a Bangor lieutenant had taken $500 from him, according to BDN archives.

Beede’s record also includes a marijuana possession conviction in 2010, and a domestic violence assault conviction from 2009, according to the archives.
