BANGOR – Doris T. Smith, 93, passed away April 2, 2013, at a local care facility after a period of declining health. She was born March 1, 1920, in Waterville, a daughter of Eugene Taylor and Laura Ramsay.
Doris attended schools in Oakland and then went on to Farmington Normal School. She received a bachelor’s degree from there in 1962.While at Farmington, she met the love of her life, Gordon, whom she married Aug. 14, 1943. Doris taught school for many years in several places including Sidney, Oakland, Sanford, Farmingdale, Fryeburg, and finally Bangor. She taught at Fairmount School from 1957 until her retirement in 1976. Upon retirement, she became a rather avid volunteer. She worked at the polls in Bangor for many years and served as warden for much of that time. Doris also worked on the altar guild at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bangor, retiring at 90. She loved the birds, and gardening, as well as reading, crossword puzzles, tennis, star gazing, Maine hockey, golf and travel. She was also known as the neighborhood nanny to many kids who grew up on Crestmont Road.
Doris was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Gordon, as well as her parents; brothers, Dwight and Wendell; and sisters, Delight Black, Ruth Curtis, Mary Smedburg and Eva Jacques. She is survived by a son, Paul D. Smith and wife, Nancy Jo, of Tierra Verde, Fla.; daughter, Pamela R. Sheridan and husband, J. Michael, of Coplin Plantation; and two granddaughters, Kimberly Rubin and husband, Stuart of Blufton, S.C., and Carol Varney of San Francisco. Doris also leaves behind several nieces and nephews; as well as special friends, Pat Martin, Nancy Harrison, Jane Clayton, Jeanette Beaton, Maria Brountas and Dick and Frances Mitchell. The family thanks the staff at Ross Manor for their compassionate care.
There will be a service for Doris in May at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bangor. A time and date to be determined. Doris would want you to smell the flowers and listen to the birds.
