OLD ORCHARD BEACH – OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Donald Lothrop Coldwell Sr., 67, died surrounded by his family April 6, 2013, at Gosnell House, Scarborough, ending a three year battle with cancer. Born in Bangor, he was the son of James E. and J. Joyce (MacEwen) Coldwell.
He was educated in Orrington and Portland schools, graduating in 1963 from Portland High School. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was a communications specialist with a tour of duty in Turkey. Using his GI Bill, he pursued a degree at the University of Maine in forestry, earning a masters degree in 1974. Don then began his 30 year career as a loss prevention consultant with Industrial Risk Insurers. After retirement, he volunteered in the library at New England Bible College, spent time with his grandchildren and vacationed. He was an active member of Hollis Center Baptist Church, until his death, serving in many varied capacities.
He was predeceased by his father. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth “Betty” A. (Coffin) Coldwell; mother; brother, Arthur J.; sister, Margaret “Peigi” Holmes; daughter, Deanne Robertson and husband, Jonathan; son, Donald Jr. and wife, Laurie; seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Dugan and his team at Maine Center for Cancer Medicine for their care, dedication and kindness.
Visiting hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 12, at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland. A celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. April 13, at Hollis Center Baptist Church.
