HERMON – Thomas J. O’Brien Jr., 79, husband of Margaret ‘Maggie’ (Sullivan) O’Brien, died April 10, 2013, in Bangor. He was born March 24, 1934, in Granville, N.Y., the son of Thomas J. O’Brien Sr. and Pauline G. (Smith) O’Brien.
Tom graduated from Granville High School in 1951 and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955 where he served 10 years as an aircraft mechanic. After his military service, Tom was a volunteer firefighter, an emergency medical service attendant in Hermon for several years and also worked many years as a carpenter, gaining much experience and often volunteering his services to those in need. He was a bird watching enthusiast and loved music. One of Tom’s most significant personal accomplishments was the formation of the band, “The Late Edition”. His love for humanity and a genuine need to help others is what brought him to join Knights of Columbus where he was active in various capacities and had been a member since 2000 with the Pine Cone Council No. 114, Bangor. Tom was a communicant of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and was a very loving and caring person who always would go out of his way to assist a person in need. His enthusiasm, love of others and his faith had been inspirational to others.
Surviving in addition to his wife of Hermon; are two brothers, Owen O’Brien and wife, Mary Lou, of Granville, N.Y., and Denis O’Brien and wife, Linda, of Scotia, N.Y.; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and by a sister, Jane Timm.
Family and friends may visit 4-6 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, April 15, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bangor.
