OAKFIELD – Wendell O. Holmes, 81, died April 13, 2013, at his home. He was born Dec. 14, 1931, in Connell, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Donald and Emma (Winkley) Holmes.
He had worked for the town of Houlton as a custodian, bus driver and police officer and also for Ward Cabin and Cianbro for 18 years.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra (Burpee) Holmes of Oakfield; 10 children, Randy Holmes of Tucson, Ariz., Wendy Holmes of New Limerick, Mitchell Holmes of Houlton, Deborah Michaud of Mechanic Falls, Christopher Holmes of Houlton, Stephen Holmes of Houlton, Gregory Holmes of Washington, D.C., Lisa Hutchinson of Hodgdon, Gordon Hall of Old Orchard Beach and Richard Hall of Portland; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald Holmes of Houlton; two sisters, Wanda Burtt of Ottawa, Canada, and Glenna Richard of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Winifred and Alan; and two sisters, Eleanor and Jean.
Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at Oakfield Baptist Church, with funeral services being held 2 p.m. with the Rev. Josh Burdon officiating. Interment will be at Oakfield Cemetery. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home, Houlton.
