CARIBOU – Herbert Sands, 90, passed away peacefully April 15, 2013 at Caribou. Herbert was born May 8, 1922, in Caribou, son of the late Bert and Ethel (Ells) Sands.
He attended Woodland and Caribou schools. He married his wife of 71 years, Ruby Pike, May 9, 1940. Mr. Sands started farming on the Tabor Road in Washburn in 1947 and farmed with his brother-in-law, Darrell Wardwell, as Sands and Wardwell until retirement in 1981. He and Ruby enjoyed traveling, camping, snowmobiling and their many bingo games at the Caribou Rehab and Nursing Center, but most of all he enjoyed many family get-togethers.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Willard and Sherry Sands, and Duane and Cecile Sands, all of Caribou; two daughters-in-law, Fern Sands of Washburn and Sue Sands of Woodland; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruby; a son, Berton; a brother, Philip; a sister, and brother-in-law, Maxine and Darrell Wardwell. The family extends a special thank you to all of the staff at Caribou Nursing and Rehab for the fine care and friendship given to Herbert during his stay there.
Friends may call 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 20, at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou, where funeral services will be held at noon with the Rev. Otto Palmer officiating. Interment will be later in the spring at Woodland Cemetery.
