STONINGTON – David Simmons Waite, 65, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2013, at a Bangor hospital from complications of cancer. David was born Aug. 23, 1947, the third son of Florence Wardwell Waite and Parker Read Waite.
He is a graduate of Episcopal Academy, Philadelphia, and Susquehanna University. A short career in banking in Rockland preceded his move to Burnt Island to enjoy “solo time.” He subsequently ran the island store on nearby Isle au Haut, a job he truly enjoyed. David returned to banking in the early 1980s. He was employed by Casco Northern Bank, Bank of Boston Private Bank, Bank of America, Sarasota, Fla., and Bar Harbor Banking and Trust. He retired in 2006 to reside with his wife, Sally, in their home on Moose Island, Stonington. David was a member of First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary, and an avid gardener and sailor. He spent many summer afternoons sailing the waters of Penobscot Bay aboard his cat boat, Firefly.
He is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Sally Simmons Richardson of Stonington; and her sons, Bradford Rice and wife, Leslie, of Stonington and Jona Rice and wife, Jamie, of Portland. He is also survived by his first wife, DeDe Waite of Falmouth; and their sons, Carter Waite of Cambridge, Mass., and Morgan Waite of Kansas City, Mo. He also leaves behind his brothers, John Waite and wife, Janet, and children, Jake, Emily, Ashley, Courtney and Parker, of Bernardsville, N.J., and Parker Waite and wife, Carolyn, of Sedgwick. In addition, he is survived by four grandchildren, whom he adored, Tyson, 12, Peyton 10, Jackson 5, and Thomas, almost 2. Jackson Rice was David’s best buddy during his illness. They spent many happy hours together drawing, painting, coloring, going to Betty’s Beach and playing bocce and baseball.
At David’s request, there will be no service. His ashes will be scattered in Merchant’s Row near Burnt Island this summer. A celebratory party, for a life well-lived, but far too short, will be afterward. Family and friends will be invited to join with David’s extended family to remember a kind gentleman, loving husband, devoted father, meticulous banker and friend who touched so many lives.
