BAR HARBOR – Frederick Cunningham, 94, died April 19, 2013, at Sonogee Rehab & Living Center, Bar Harbor, with his loving wife, Emma (Hanson) Cunningham, by his side. He was born Sept. 11, 1918, in Bar Harbor, the sixth son of Arthur and Josie (Richardson) Cunningham.
Fred grew up in Bar Harbor, attended Ethel I. Conners Elementary School and graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1937. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during World War II as an airplane maintenance crew, flying many missions over the hump from India to China. After the war he returned home to Bar Harbor and married his childhood sweetheart, Emma, settling on West Street. Fred captained the vessel “Jacqueline,” a boat owned by Robert Kinney of West Street Fish Processing Plant. Fred was one of the first lobstermen in Bar Harbor and was a familiar sight on West Street. He lobstered until he retired at age 62; then he and Emma went on many adventurous travels across the country to Florida, Arkansas, Alaska and Hawaii.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 65 years, he leaves behind son, Jack Edward Cunningham and wife, Beth; grandsons, James and wife, Jessica, Jared and Samuel; nephew, Michael Hanson, who was raised as their son; granddaughters, Logan and Deborah; and great-granddaughters, Peyton and Kara. Fred was predeceased by his brothers, Arthur, Irving, Ralph, Walter and Frank.
