BELFAST – Jane P. (Palmer) Horne, 86, passed away May 1, 2013. She was born Nov. 18, 1926, in Rumford, the daughter of Fred and Albertina (Ridley) Palmer.
She attended Crosby High School and graduated from Oak Grove in 1944 and Colby Junior College in 1946. She married Allen Horne Aug. 9, 1947. Jane worked for several years at Waldo County General Hospital as a medical records secretary. She left the hospital in 1972 to join her husband when he took ownership of their family business, Colburn Shoe Store. She and Allen worked together, side by side, for several years before selling the store to their son, Brian, who still owns the business today. These were some of the most enjoyable years of Jane’s life, as it was during this time that she watched her family grow. Jane was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren compete in numerous sporting events. She was very interested in the careers and travels of all her grandchildren and very proud of all of their accomplishments. Late in life, Jane and Allen decided to pick up the game of golf. They quickly fell in love with the sport and in fact, many a Sunday afternoon was spent watching Tiger Woods and Fred Couples compete on the PGA Tour. Jane was proud to be the wife of an Anah Shriner. She and Allen were always happy to be part of a good time and a good cause. They enjoyed many events at the Waldo County Shrine Club and other Shrine events throughout New England. Jane especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a gracious host who always opened her oceanfront home to family and their friends. Many holiday, birthday, graduation, wedding, baby celebrations and impromptu parties have taken place at her beautiful “Airmail Lane” home. Jane was always at her best and most happy during these family gatherings. Even through difficult times, Jane remained positive and always had a smile. She was always quick-witted and left no doubt where she stood on an issue.
She is predeceased by her parents; her husband of 59 years, Allen S. Horne; daughter, Alice E. Pattershall; and infant sister, Anne Eliza Palmer. Jane is survived by her children, Chilloa “Puzz” Caswell and significant other, Peter Friend, Blaine Horne and wife, Deborah, Brian Horne and wife, Cathy and Jane Littlefield and husband, Bob; grandsons, Jeremy Horne and wife, Lauren, Stewart Caswell, Kenneth “Colby” Horne, Garren Horne and Nate Littlefield and wife, Kelly; granddaughters, Elizabeth Wakem and husband, Andy, Kate Fagan and husband, Larry, Sara Breshears and husband, Jacob, Nealley Horne and Audrey Littlefield; great-grandchildren, Morgan Fernald, Wyatt Horne, Willow Horne, Wren Horne, Quinn Fagan and Owen Breshears; and special nieces and nephews, Terry Horne, Jon Horne, Diane Edwards, Fred Horne, Drayton Beckwith, Delese Holmes and Dacia Stoll.
